GOLF BOARD
2014 ANNUAL REPORT
The City of Fort Collins Golf Board held 4 Regular Meetings 2014. Board Members were Kevin
Gallagher, Johnny Hodges, Shane Houska, Tim Martinez, Jason Patello, Don Sinnar and Jim
Snyder. Don Sinnar resigned from the Board in May. Shane Houska and Tim Martinez’s terms
expired in December. Shane is term limited and Tim elected to reapply. The Board elected
officers were Shane Houska, Board Chairperson, along with Johnny Hodges as Board Vice
Chairperson and Don Sinnar as Board Secretary. Lisa Poppaw served as City Council Liaison to
the Board. J.R. Schnelzer, Director of Parks along with Bill Whirty, Manager of Parks, Mike
Calhoon, Parks Supervisor, Dawna Gorkowski, Parks Finance Supervisor and Dawn Worth, Golf
Administrative Assistant, provided staff support to the Board.
The Golf Board advises and makes recommendations to the Community Services Director and
the City Council as to rules, regulations, policies, administrative and budgetary matters
pertaining to the operation and maintenance of all City-owned golf courses, City Park Nine,
Collindale and SouthRidge.
2014 Budget/Fees
The Board was updated and provided input on the Golf Division’s budget.
In October the Board held a Public Meeting to discuss the Proposed 2015 Golf Fees &
Charges.
Marketing
Staff continued to work with the Recreation Department’s Community Relations and
Marketing staff on Golf marketing efforts.
There has not been an increase in the Marketing budget since 2013.
Secured two sponsors for the 2014 scorecards (First National Bank and Dellenbach
Cadillac) which covered printing costs of the scorecards.
Increased marketing efforts for the Premier Card.
Our partnership with The Coloradoan continued for golf related articles from the Golf
Professionals.
The partnership with CSU continued and Golf will receive marketing opportunities at
Moby Arena
Golf and Recreation staff continued to utilize Social Media (Twitter and Facebook) to
update golfers. Social media followers grew in 2014.
Held the Big Swing/Demo Day at Collindale Golf Course in April. Drive, put challenge.
Attended Golf Business Conference to learn more about marketing and operations.
Continued with our Heat of the Day, Fall & Winter coupons.
Implemented a 3 day Veteran’s rate.
Online tee times.
In June Collindale held the Drive, Chip and Putt Challenge.
Supported Get Golf Ready in association with the Golf Professionals.
Course Improvements
Continued support of the Master Tree Plan.
Updated on Emerald Ash Borer in March.
Completed the Tee Marker project at City Park Nine.
Sustainable Practices
Advocate for sustainable improvements for water and energy conservation.
The courses continued the use and evaluation of organic products, fertilizers and
pesticides.
Electric carts were added at City Park Nine.
SouthRidge achieved designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.”
Collindale is finalizing their certification.
Strategic Plan
The Strategic Plan was finalized.
Policies and Procedures
The Board was updated and continued to provide input throughout the process. The
updated manual was finalized in June.
Renewal of Contracts
Contract renewals for Doug Perry, City Park Nine Golf Professional, and David
McCleave, SouthRidge Golf Professional, were finalized in April.
At the August meeting the Board voted to move forward with the renewal of contracts for
Dale Smigelsky, Collindale Golf Professional, and C.B. & Pott’s, Collindale Food &
Beverage Concessionaire.
Golf Board Structure and Goals
The Board discussed their structure and goals. They determined that it is their goal to
continue to be City Golf Course advocates. They will also promote and increase play,
emphasizing juniors, while assuring affordability and service quality while supporting
Golf as an Enterprise Fund.
