Women’s Commission Meeting Minutes
June 19, 2013
6:30 — 8:30 p.m.
215 N. Mason Avenue; Room 1-B

The City of Fort Collins Women’s Commission promotes decisions and actions that address the
needs and positively impact women in our community. We do this by listening to the voice of
women, advising city council, promoting community events, and educating ourselves and others
about safety, health and poverty.
Attendees: Catherine Douras, Suzette Greany, Lea Hanson, Jan Hawn, Merry Hummell, Ginny
Carroll

Absent: Suzanne Jarboe-Simpson, Marija Weeden-Osborn, Deborah Young, Annette Zacharias
Chair Hanson called the meeting to order at 6:32pm
Introductions & Announcements
Guest: Joe Frank, Director of the Department for Social Sustainability
• Organized/created June 2012
• To address social issues for City Council
• Grants for affordable housing and human services
• Social issues that City Council is interested in that overlap with Women’s Commission
o Early childhood care and education, with a study and program recommendation
for employee childcare benefits
o Homelessness
o Affordable housing
o Social responsibility
• Looking for partnerships
• Gap Analysis and Strategic Plan for social sustainability and to define roles, in particular
the City’s role
o There will be a role for boards and commissions in this process
o Timeline is through December 2014
o Include information from the Report on the Status of Women and Girls in
Colorado?
• Examining and understanding the social impact of projects
• The Women’s Commission can provide advice and perspective

• Women’s Commission to help plan and participate in a possible
diversity/multiculturalism conference (2015?)
Approval of the May Minutes
Chair Hanson entertained a motion to approve the May 15, 2013 meeting minutes. It was
moved by Greany and seconded by Hawn. The motion passed with the correction of the date in
the “Approval of April Minutes” section.
New Business
1. Periodic Review Preparation — Hanson shared final submission
2. NACW Proposed Bylaw Change — Eliminating proxy, changing a committee name,
nomination committee members, etc.
3. Summer meeting dates — No meeting in July
4. Police report about parking garage safety — Invite Jerry Schiager to come speak about
safety in Fort Collins
Ongoing Business
1. Annual Mixer debrief
a. Hanson collected and compiled the notes from breakout groups and forwarded that
to Jarboe-Simpson
b. Well-attended by boards and commissions as well as City Council and City staff
c. Good discussions
d. Agenda went well
2. Statewide Research Summit debrief
a. Hanson, Hawn, and Young attended morning session
b. Documentary about the Cliff Effect
c. Panel discussion — physician, domestic violence, access to education
d. Lots of really good statistics and information, very recent
e. What to do next? Ideas:
i. Host a screening of The Cliff Effect
ii. Hawn is working on connecting with the regional committee
Upcoming events
*please note - the July Women’s Commission meeting is cancelled. The August meeting will be
held as scheduled on August 21, 2013.
