HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013 - Womens Commission - Annual ReportCity of Fort Collins Women’s Commission 2013 Annual Report The City of Fort Collins Women’s Commission promotes decisions and actions that address the needs and positively impact women in our community. We do this by listening to the voice of women, advising city council, promoting community events, and educating ourselves and others about safety, health and poverty. Women’s Commission members in 2013 were Ginny Carroll, Catherine Douras, Suzette Greany, Lea Hanson, Jan Hawn, Merry Hummell, Marija Weeden‐Osborn, Deborah Young and Annette Zacharias. In 2013, the Women’s Commission (WC) accomplished the following:  The WC held the fourth annual retreat on February 9, 2013, to discuss, review and plan the following: 1. Revisit subcommittees and determine roles, if any 2. Action items for 2013 (events i.e. Pride in the Park) 3. Review of Women’s Commission by City Council 4. WC role in discussion of Boards and Commissions (mixers, collaboration meetings, etc.) 5. Begin brainstorm for 2013 Board and Commission mixer‐time, place, date 6. Council Work Plan review 7. Marcille N. Wood award and breakfast on May 2, 2013 8. State bills regarding Women’s health 9. Review and revise display board  The WC submitted questions for the League of Women Voters forum for mayoral candidates in March.  Catherine Douras attended the CSU Women’s Conference on March 9, 2013.  The WC prepared a presentation for the Women at Noon series at Colorado State, April 17, 2013, Lory Student Center (canceled due to snow).  The WC partnered with Human Relations Commission (HRC) to present the Marcile N. Wood award in 2013. The winner, Dierdre Sullivan, was announced at the HRC Award breakfast on Thursday, May 2, 2013. The Women’s Commission conducted the review process and assisted in the presentation at the breakfast.  The WC continued the dialogue with other Boards and Commissions by hosting a third breakfast mixer on May 22, 2013.  The WC completed the Periodic Review on July 9, 2013.  Lea Hanson, Jan Hawn and Deborah Young attended the Women’s Foundation Statewide Research Summit on the Status of Women and Girls in Colorado on June 12, 2013.  Jan Hawn, Marija Weeden‐Osborn and Annette Zacharias attended the Colorado Disability Pride Fest on September 7, 2013 and conducted an informal informational survey.  Lea Hanson, Catherine Douras and Ginny Carroll attended the Women’s Foundation of Colorado Community Discussion at the Medical Center of the Rockies on September 9, 2013.  Jan Hawn coordinated a screening and discussion of The Cliff Effect on October 16, 2013. Several members of the Women’s Commission attended and Marija Weeden‐Osborn facilitated the discussion.  Jan Hawn attended the Health District of Northern Larimer County health issues discussion on October 29, 2013.  Marija Weeden‐Osborn, Annette Zacharias and Ginny Carroll attended the Social Sustainability Discussion on December 2, 2013, in the City of Fort Collins Community Room.  Jan Hawn attended the Senior Advisory Board Discussion about mobility and transportation on December 4, 2013, at Pathways Hospice.  Lea Hanson attended the CPIO Discussion on December 11, 2013, in the City of Fort Collins Community Room.  The WC presented the Women’s Wellness Week, International Women’s Day, Women’s History Month, Equal Pay Day, and Women’s Equality Day Proclamations at City Council meetings.  The WC was a presence at City Council meetings in 2013, with a Commission member attending almost every one.  The WC continued our membership with the National Association of Commissions for Women (NACW). Guests to meetings included: Heather Camerer – Northern Colorado Site Coordinator at The Center Joe Frank – Director of the Department for Social Sustainability Myles Crane – Human Relations Commission (HRC) Jerry Schiager – Police Captain, Fort Collins Police Services Keith Maynard – Crimes Against Persons Detective Adela Antonoiu – Community member John Hutto – Fort Collins Police Chief The Women’s Commission continues to work toward better communication with City Council and collaboration with Boards and Commissions. The coordination of the annual breakfast mixer continued communication with Boards and Commissions are evidence of this work. To accomplish the goals set by the Women’s Commission, members attended and participated in numerous community events surrounding women’s issues. The Women’s Commission looks forward to supporting this process in 2014.
