HomeMy WebLinkAboutYouth Advisory Board - Minutes - 03/06/2013YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES Regular meeting – March 6th, 2013 6:30 p.m. Council Liaison: Aislinn Kottwitz Staff Liaison: Steve Budner, Recreation, 221-6861 Megan Greer, Recreation, 224-6032 Board Chairperson: Pranaya Sathe Board Members Present: Siyu Wu, Pranaya Sathe, Sarah Pruznick, Langston Stuckey, Thomas Long Board Member Absent: Natalie Pederson, Kelsey Hennig, Nathan Welch, Patrice Quadrel Staff Members Present: Megan Greer, Administrator – Recreation Department Guest(s) Present: Myles Crane from Human Relations Committee Call meeting to Order: The meeting was called to order by President, Pranaya Sathe, at 6:35 p.m. Approval of Minutes: Minutes approved 5-0, moved by Sarah, seconded by Thomas. Introduction of new members No new members. Agenda Review: None Citizen Participation: No citizen participation. Chairman’s Report: 1. Pranaya pleads with the group to contact speakers and follow up. Other Business: 1. Jobs of the Future event planning a. YAB currently has only confirmed attendance from the school district and the Larimer Work Force. There is an economist and a youth employment from the Larimer Work Force. b. YAB is considering whether to keep the date in April or to push it back to October to allow for more planning time. Although it would mean working with a new board, it would allow for new ideas and more time. c. The members agreed to meet next Wednesday, March 13th, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at Council Tree Library to have one last push and see if the event can be coordinated. d. The new location is Old Town Library, with a capacity of 140 people. e. The marketing plan is postponed and will be discussed if the event does occur. 2. YAB members need to go or recruit somebody to go to the Youth Tobacco Coalition meeting next Thursday, March 14th at 6:30 p.m. 3. YAB must discuss electing new officers for the next year. Siyu Wu expressed interest in the position of Chair. Langston Stuckey and Sarah Pruznick expressed interest in potential positions. Megan will ask the City Council to see if the election for new officers can be delayed until all other members are on board. 4. The City Council had a fracking discussion Tuesday night, March 6th, 2013 and voted to ban fracking within city limits. YAB members were asked about their opinions on this issue. Most YAB members expressed excitement at the change, but it is very likely that there will be an appeal arguing that it is illegal to ban fracking. Water restriction issues were also discussed because of recent water shortages. There is already a restriction in watering lawns in the summer. YAB members considered the option of writing a letter about this issue to the City Council, but the idea is postponed until the Future Jobs Fair issue is resolved. 5. Another issue the YAB may want to discuss is the procedures considering medical marijuana facilities in Fort Collins. Members can express their opinions and make recommendations about the marijuana issue by writing a letter about it. 6. COYAC updates: a. The Sotomayor event received over 1000 applications for only 100 spots. The application process is closed, and COYAC members will be spending the next week reading over all the applications. b. COYAC is still accepting applications, the Chair encourages a YAB member to apply. 7. The Recreation department has a float for the Saint Patrick Day Parade on March 16th starting at 10. YAB members are encouraged to participate. Megan will get shirts for the members. Adjournment: Langston moved to adjourn at 7:25 p.m. and Thomas seconded.
