Fall 2012 Accomplishments
• Attended a very helpful and positive Work Session with Council during our summer
hiatus. Council agreed to change our Work Plan timeline to September-May, so that it
falls in line with the school year. Council also agreed to change the YAB appointment
schedule so that new members join YAB at the beginning of the school year instead of
in January. This will prevent us from losing and gaining members in the middle of the
school year.
•Reviewed City of Fort Collins 2013-2014 budget and spoke at City Council on items of
concern/interest.
•Reviewed the City of Fort Collins Parks Plan with Craig Foreman.
•Learned about Safe Routes to School with Nancy Nichols.
•Attended a mini-CityWorks session run by Claire Thomas.
•Learned about the free transportation program for youth with Transfort’s Emma
McArdle.
•Learned about and provided feedback on MAX with Claire Thomas.
•Collaborated with the Human Relations Commission, Commission on Disability,
Women’s Commission, and Senior Center Advisory Committee on the Make it Stop:
Elder Abuse Summit held at the Senior Center.
•Attended a planning meeting facilitated by Karen Buchanan, Chair of the Human
Relations Commission. The meeting was designed to help YAB members narrow their
focus and identify goals for 2013.
2013 Work Plan
• Will host a “Future of the Job Market (actual name TBD)” fair for high school students
to illustrate what industries/trades will be experiencing growth in the next 2-6 years –
about the time students would be getting out of trade school or college. Finding a job
after high school or college is a concern for many teens and their parents. We are hoping
to recruit panelists from CSU (Economics, FortZED), Hewlett Packard, Poudre Valley
Hospital, City of Fort Collins HR Department and other large regional employers to share
information on future human relations needs.
Thus far, the Human Relations Commission has offered to collaborate on this
event and we are planning on asking other B&Cs to join us. Date is TBD, but will ideally
be held in late March or early April.
•YAB will also be implemental in the recruitment and selection of teens who will
participate on a youth lead tobacco prevention team for the Larimer County Youth
Tobacco Coalition as part of the Amendment 35 grant that the Larimer County
Department of Health and Environment received in October 2012.
•YAB will continue to monitor City Council agenda and share support or concern where
necessary.
