Home My WebLink About2013 - Art In Public Places Board - Work PlanRen Burke, Museum of Discovery Transformer Cabinet Mural ART IN PUBLIC PLACES BOARD 2013 WORK PLAN Introduction: The Art in Public Places Program (APP) was reauthorized in April of 1998, with revisions to the City Code in 2012. The APP Board will continue to advise City Council on projects and programs relating to public art, design, aesthetics and work with staff to implement the recent changes to the program. Range of Activities Planned for 2013: Activities • Promote APP projects for the benefit of the community as a means for economic development • Review and make recommendations to City Council on all APP projects and city art donations • Advise and make recommendations for changes to rules, regulations, guidelines, policy, administrative, and budgetary matters pertaining to the APP Program • The APP Program will continue to develop Utility projects that support the unique goals of the Utility Department • Continue to share best practices with other agencies, both locally and nationally on the Transformer Cabinet Mural & Pianos About Town Projects and our APP process. • Continue to maintain and update the APP website, brochures and maps for the APP Transformer Cabinet, APP Collection and Pedestrian Paver projects • Gather feedback on APP projects • Continue to maintain the APP art collection Design Consultant Projects The APP Board currently has a juried list of 15 visual artists on the APP preapproved Design Consultant Resource List. This list is updated every two years. Using an open process, the APP Board will review artist submissions in 2013. City departments select artists from the list to work with design teams to integrate art into city construction projects. 1% Projects (City construction projects with budgets over $250,000) These projects are usually developed in conjunction with a larger construction project so the art project timeline coincides with the construction timeline. Therefore, the APP art project could be delayed if the construction project is delayed. All these projects have an artist working with the project design team to develop concepts that meet the goals of the project. APP staff continues to work with city departments as they develop new projects in 2013. The APP Board currently has fifteen 1% projects: • Fort Collins Museum of Discovery - This is a partnership between the Fort Collins Museum and the Discovery Science Center. Internationally known artist Ned Kahn, was selected from 218 applicants and is currently working with the design team on this project. • Linden Streetscape - The team selected artist Susan Dailey from the Design Consultant List. This art is currently in fabrication and the granite pavers will be installed in 2013. • Linden Street Pocket Park - The APP Program is working with the Linden Street Pocket Park Project team and artist Andy Dufford to develop a concept that will engage the community and complement the Linden St. Streetscape Project. • Mason Corridor (MAX) - The APP Program has been working with the project team and artist to develop the concepts for art to further enhance and support this project. Artist Robert Tully was selected to work with the project team and develop art elements that are functional components of the corridor. The art elements, including benches, windscreens, beacons, light poles, and a historical marker, will be installed in 2013. • Nix Farm Office Building - The project team is in the process of selecting an artist from the Design Consultant List to develop art concepts for this site. • North College, Conifer to Willox - The project team will continue working with artist Andy Dufford for the second phase of the North College project. This project is currently in design. • Pedestrian Paver - The APP program started working with the Engineering Dept. in 2003 on pavers that were incorporated into city sidewalks. The program will start promoting an open competition to solicit drawings from Fort Collins students ages 3 through 18 for the 2013 season. Designs will be selected and sandblasted into granite pavers. This will be the tenth year for the Pedestrian Paver program. • Pickle Plant Gateway - The APP Program and project team will work with selected artist Robert Tully to refine the gateway design for this site. • Radiant Park - APP is working with the Park Planning Department and artist Erick Johnson on art elements for the Radiant Park Project. Artist Erick Johnson is currently fabricating the art components for this project which will be installed in 2013. • Registry Park - The project team selected artist Patrick Marold from the Design Consultant List to work with them on a site specific art for this park project. The art elements for this park will be installed in 2013. • Reservoir Ridge - Selected artist Joe McGrane is working with the project team to develop art concepts for this site. • Transformer Cabinet Murals - The APP Program has completed 144 cabinet murals to date. To continue to help mitigate the graffiti on these cabinets, APP along with the Light & Power Department will continue to prioritize sites for future mural projects and select new artists in 2013. • Utility Marker Project –The Utility Department has enlisted the help of the APP program on this project. This multi-year project is will be fabricating storm drain markers and manhole covers, helping to educate the public on local watersheds. Designs will be selected from community submissions. • Water Restoration - The Utility Water Systems Engineering Department is in the process of designing a water diversion wall on the Cache la Poudre River near the Environmental Learning Center. Artist Lynne Hull was selected through the APP process to work with the project team and has been meeting with the team to design the wall at this site. Meetings for this project will resume in 2013. • West Harmony Road - The APP Board will select an artist to develop concepts for this site. Collaborations/Outreach • Pianos About Town - Starting in 2011 APP partnered with DDA and Bohemian Foundation on the Pianos about Town Project which had an “Art in Action” project in Old Town Square. This is the second season that the APP Program is administering this project. The 2012/2013 season will end March 31, 2013. The partners will discuss the possibility of continuing this project. • Sponsorship of Transformer Cabinet Murals – Utilities and the APP program have developed a program for the private sponsorship of the Transformer Cabinet Murals. The direction is to have the private owner donate the money to the city for the mural. The selected artist will work with Art in Public Places Program to create the mural on the transformer cabinet. We currently have organizations/businesses who are considering sponsoring a cabinet mural in 2013. • Trash Can Murals - APP continues to work with various local individuals and organizations to paint murals on metal trash cans to be placed in parks throughout the city by the Parks Department. • Poudre School District - APP continues to partner with the Poudre School District on various projects to keep local youth involved in self-expression and the arts.
