Human Relations Commission
2010 Annual Report
As Community leaders and advisors to City Council, we research, deliberate and take proactive
and responsive measures to promote the dignity of individuals and groups in Fort Collins.
HRC Mission Statement
Educational Outreach Committee:
HRC pamphlets were printed and distributed at various events.
An HRC power point presentation is available for group presentations.
The HRC cosponsored a forum on What Does “Queer” Mean in conjunction
with the Lambda Center on May 27, 2010. Approximately 50 people attended.
The HRC sponsored a table and distributed brochures at the 7
th
annual Pride in
the Park on June 5, 2010.
The HRC continued to support and sponsor the Eracism Film Series.
Government Relations Committee
City Council, Citizen Review Board, Senior Advisory Board, Larimer County
Office on Aging Advisory Board and Character Fort Collins meetings were
attended and/or monitored.
The HRC maintains and updates a list of translators available to citizens who
may need this service.
Members of the HRC met with Mayor Doug Hutchinson concerning a
proclamation on Freedom to Marry Day.
Mayor Doug Hutchinson met with the HRC at a regular meeting to discuss the
scope of proclamations which are announced at the beginning of City Council
meetings.

Members of the HRC attended a Pueblo / Aurora Statewide HRC Retreat in
Pueblo, Colorado on September 30 and October 1, 2010.
On June 10, Police Captain Jerry Schiager gave a presentation to the HRC on
the Citizen Liaison Program and the Citizen Review Board.
Members of the HRC attended various Plan Fort Collins meetings.
Assistant City Attorney Greg Tempel presented guidelines on legal issues to be
considered in organizing and presenting forums sponsored by the City.
Chairperson Maya Jairam met with various Boards and Commissions and City
Council members to further cooperation among Commissions and Boards.
The committee submitted a Human Rights Day Proclamation which was
presented by Mayor Hutchinson at the City Council meeting on December 7,
2010.
Media / Community Recognition Committee:
Once again the HRC conducted a search for individuals, groups, companies or
organizations which inspire contributions and leadership on behalf of minority or
disadvantaged citizens to the betterment of the community. A Breakfast was held
at the Northside Aztlan Community Center on April 30. Awards were presented to
the winners. The breakfast was dedicated to former mayor Ann Azari. Guest
Speaker was Kay Rios. The event was attended by approximately 85 people.
The HRC and the Women’s Commission met and agreed to coordinate the
presentation of Awards by including the Marcile N. Wood award in the HRC
Awards Breakfast. The two commissions will work together to coordinate this.
Two “Soapbox” articles were written and published in the Fort Collins Coloradoan
newspaper.
