HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010 - Commission On Disability - Annual ReportCommission On Disability 2010 Annual Report This year we welcomed several new members to the COD. Our 2010 board consisted of: Terry Schlicting (Chairperson), Michael Devereaux (Vice- Chairperson), Michelle Miller (Secretary), Hettie Huber (Historian), Sam Cavallaro, Jeffery Coon, Mare Franklin-Gaumer, Thomas Klender, and Karen Perry. The COD continued to work towards a compromise to the discontinuation of Transfort route 18 which provided service to Edora Pool and Ice Center (EPIC). However, Transfort is unwilling to compromise on this issue. We hope to revisit the issue at a later date. Terry Schlicting wrote a letter which was read to City Council by Mike Devereaux. The letter stated our support for the continuation of Dial-a-Ride evening service. Dial-a-Ride service was not cut as a result of Fort Collins voters approving the referendum that allowed for a small tax increase in which to fund many City services. Jennifer Petrik, Project Manager of the North College renovation project, regularly consulted with the COD regarding the improvements that are to be made. Also, City engineers Kyle Lambrecht and Randy Maizland presented a quick update on this project. The projected start date is April, 2011. The COD decided to update the by-laws in order to make it more congruent with the goals and missions of the COD. We also decided to reduce the number of members from 11 to 9. This was done because we were having difficulties forming a quorum to vote on issues due to attendance. Mike Devereaux and Thomas Klender of the COD and Barrier Busters, along with Cheryl Distaso of the Center for Justice Peace and Environment, conducted an assessment of the accessibility in the downtown area. They received a special recognition award during this year’s Mayors Awards. 2010 Mayor’s awards were presented to: Dorothy Lasley Memorial Award: Kelsey Paul, organizer of 'TGIF' Employer of the year: Albertson's Grocery Store Employee of the year: Keith Aragon, Poudre School District, Fort Collins High School Service Provider of the Year: Renee Lee and the ARO Team Volunteer of the year: Jimmy Kutchar Spirit of Fort Collins: SLiCE - Student Leadership Involvement & Community Engagement, CSU The COD completed the 2011 work plan in November. Future projects include the development of a local resource for residents with disabilities who are seeking accessible housing. Currently, there is very little accessible housing available in terms of guidance for those in need. Also, we would like to address the accessibility of Transfort bus stops throughout Fort Collins.
