a. Wheel/Power chairs in bike lanes discussion – Mark Jackson
Armendariz has brought some unsafe practices to the attention of Hal Dean
concerning some motorized chair users not converging into the bike lanes safely.
Copies of the ordinance were provided and discussion ensued. What does the
COD think? There appears to be a need to educate some citizens as to the intent
and safe usage of the ordinance. Dillman felt it might be appropriate to reach out
to the public in a positive manner as a reminder of the change in City Ordinance
with some safety tips. McDonnell suggested using the utility bill inserts as a way
of disseminating this information. Something outlining when the usage is
appropriate and some basic safety and courtesy recommendations. Armendariz
pointed out that many wheelchairs are not equipped with any night visibility
apparatus. This should be mentioned in the safety tips. Coon mentioned
beginning with a “Soapbox” article in the Fort Collins Coloradoan. Jackson
offered to ghost write the article and get COD endorsement at the next monthly
meeting.
