Youth Advisory Board highlights of 2010 include: • At the end of 2009 the board members did a survey on how youth feel about their community. The questions were as follows: - I feel I have a voice in the community - I feel I have a voice in my school - I feel like Fort Collins offers diverse opportunities to spend my time - I feel like ___________ is an issue that needs to be changed in this community - Other comments, eg. what is the best thing in Fort Collins and what is the worst thing. This survey was given to a random sampling of students in Poudre School District, and at the beginning of 2010 the results were made into a presentation. This presentation was given at our March meeting to which a number of city leaders were invited. It was also repeated at a March 23 meeting of Poudre School District board. Both presentations were very well received and elicited many positive comments and suggestions for the future of the board. • The board heard several presentations in 2010. In April there were presentations on CanDo which stands for Coalition for Activity and Nutrition to Defeat Obesity. There was also a presentation of Plan Fort Collins. In May a presentation was given on Healthier Communities Coalition. The board voted to support the addition of more physical education opportunities in school. Several members attended additional forums of Plan Fort Collins and found it very educational and also felt like the employees in charge of the forums were impressed with their interest and questions. • A Recreation department update became a part of every meeting giving members the opportunity to learn about and comment on Recreation programs. • An ambitious work plan was adopted including: - Youth Advisory Board will participate in the Father’s Day 5K race on June 19, 2011 and will create a competition for teenagers from the middle schools and high schools to promote fitness.
