Guest: Joann Ginal, Human Relations Commission
The meeting was called to order at 6:30pm by Chair Sue Baccari. The January 21, 2009
minutes were presented for review. One correction was made to the minutes. Wonders of
Women presentation was made by Dr Boryshenko, not Dr. Shenko. This change was
noted in the minutes. Barb moved that the minutes be accepted as corrected. Becky
seconded the motion. The motion passed.
Joann Ginal introduced herself as a representative from the City's Human Relations
Commission (HRC), and currently serving as the Chair for the Education and Outreach
Committee. Joann thanked the Women's Commission for making time on the schedule to
meet with her. She expressed her delight in reconnecting with the Women's Commission,
as she had served on the Commission more than ten years ago. The HRC is beginning
work on a community dialogue around elder abuse, and is beginning this process with a
brainstorming session scheduled for May 201h at 6:30pm at the Fort Collins Senior
Center. The topic is timely because of recent television stories about high school students
abusing residents of care facilities in Minnesota. Joann invited members of the Women's
Commission to participate in the brainstorm session, and suggested there may be ways
for the HRC and the Women's Commission to work together on this issue, since women
comprise the majority of the victims of elder abuse. The HRC will handle the advertising
for this brainstorming session. All ages are welcome to participate.
The Women's Commission expressed interest in continuing the dialogue with the HRC
and invited Joann to come back to the March 2009 meeting. Joann agreed to do so, and
also invited members of the Women's Commission to attend an HRC meeting which are
held the 2nd Thursday of the month at 5:30pm in the CIC room at 300 LaPorte Avenue,
City Hall. Joann distributed nomination forms for the HRC's awards which are presented
on May I't at a breakfast.
