The Telecommunications Board provided advice and support on a variety of initiatives
in 2008.
Downtown WiFi Pilot Project
The Board continued to monitor and and discuss the status of the downtown wi-fi pilot
project operated by Front Range Internet Inc (FRII). The project has continued to
evolve and different business models have been explored. Currently a FRII is offering
free service in the downtown area and is attempting to sell advertising to support the
service.
Comcast Services
Another topic of board meetings was a discussion regarding customer information on
Comcast offerings and customer service issues. The Board met with representatives
from Comcast to share information and express concerns. Topics included the Fort
Collins Public Access Network (FCPAN) public access channel reassignment and the
digital television transition.
Citizen Issue Resolution Facilitation
Citizens raised issues of to the Board regarding a variety of issues including Comcast
Customer Services, cable TV and telephone line under grounding. The Board helped
facilitate resolution of these issues.
FCPAN Office SDace
The Fort Collins Public Access Network (FCPAN) met with the board to discuss their
needs for a physical office space from which to operate and to store their equipment.
FC Pan asked the board for their support of FCPAN's request to City Council that FCPAN
be provided office space in the City's business incubator facility. The Board sent a letter
to City Council in support of FCPAN's request.
General informational briefings.
The board received informational briefings and had discussions regarding a number of
general telecommunications related topics. These briefings included presentations by
the Fort Collins utilities on the city's automatic metering infrastructure strategies, the
city's channel 14 governmental access channel, and Qwest communications fiber to the
node broadband service enhancement initiative.
