The Commission on Disability experienced a lot of member turnover. Our 2008 board
consisted of Terry Schlicting, Beverly Hageseth, Mary Elizabeth Lenahan, Jason
Holland, Mare Franklin-Gaumer, Vivian Armendariz, Alva Vineyard, Kimberlee Imig,
Harry Meyer, Laura Burnett, and Lydia Wiatrowski.
COD member, Vivian Armendariz met with council member and the streets department
to address the issue of snow removal and curb cuts. Vivian Armendariz and community
activist, Cheryl Distasco met with Rich Kopp and Ginny Sawyer to take pictures and do a
story with the local Coloradoan.
COD submitted ideas for consideration to be included in the Bike Plan 1995 Addendum.
Those suggestion's included:
1. Investigate sharing bikeways with persons in wheelchairs.
2. Include the wheelchair symbol on bike -pedestrian signage.
3. Add information in education campaign regarding access for persons with
disabilities.
Police Chief, Dennis Harrison attended COD meeting to provide clarification on
wheelchairs in bike/pedestrian lanes and answer questions regarding citations.
Britney Sorensen from Traffic Operations was invited to discuss concerns about using
crosswalks safely. Concerns were expressed regarding the cross time in Old Town and on
Lemay & Main.
COD members watched the Mason Street corridor video.
COD addressed Dial -A -Ride and bus transportation issues. CSU and other community
organizations visited COD and gave information on the services they provide the disabled
community.
Erika Keeton, City Engineering Department visited the COD to discuss street and
sidewalk repairs and provide contact information to report problem areas.
Mayor's Awards were presented to:
Spirit of Fort Collins — Alison Dawson
Rose Kreston — Dorothy Lasley
Volunteer of the Year — Bobbie Cambell
Employer of the Year — Forney Industries
Employee of the Year— Steve Wixson
Service Provider of the Year — Center for Community Partnerships
COD approved the Community Access project in June.
In October the county launched the Emergency Registry for Larimer County special
needs located at www.larimer.ora or call 211.
COD completed the 2009 workplan, defined member roles and responsibilities, and
nominated new officers.
In December the COD held a luncheon to honor outgoing members which included
Vivian Armendariz, Mary Elizabeth Lenahan, Susan Williams, and Steve Rierson.
