Mason, Rm 1-13 Attendees: Sue Baccari., Hollie Kopp., Marjorie McTaggart., Shellie Leach., Annette Zacharias., Kristen Sergi. Members absent: Barbara Goff. A correction to the May 21 minutes was offered. They should read that "Joan", not "Sue" be added to the distribution list, under the section titled "Introductions and Annoucements". Marjorie moved that the minutes be accepted, as corrected. Annette seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Old Business MNW Award Follow Up The MNW Award will be presented in front of City Council, on July 1, 2008. The presentation will be part of the proclamation segment of the meeting, which begins at 5:30pm. Annette has confirmed that Mary, the winner, and Victor, her nominator will be able to attend the presentation. Mary indicated she was thrilled with being selected to receive this award, and will bring her son to the ceremony. Annette and Shellie will represent the Women's Commission during the presentation, and will take Mary to dinner after the ceremony. Annette will try and find out something about Mary's passion, in order to be able to make a recommendation to the Commission about a possible gift, to accompany the award. Annette has ordered the plaque to be picked up after June 27t'. Marjorie had been the recipient of the MNW Award a few years ago, and brought in the framed certificate that had been presented to her. The Commission liked the certificate, which had been signed by the Mayor and asked if it was possible to have something similar for this year's award winner, rather than a plaque. A copy of Marjorie's certificate was made and provided to Annette, who will use it as a template. Suzanne will coordinate with City staff to get a gold seal with the Mayor's mark and the Mayor's signature put onto the completed certificate. Suzanne will also create speaking points for the Mayor to use. Annette will pick up the dinner tab, and provide an itemized receipt to Suzanne for reimbursement. Suzanne reminded the Commission that the City could not pay for alcoholic drinks as part of the reimbursement. Essay Contest Thank You Notes — Follow Up Thank you notes still need to be sent to vendors providing gifts for the 2008 Essay Contest winners. Sue will draft the message and send it to Suzanne, and Shellie will provide the names/addresses. Once Suzanne has these pieces, she'll create and distribute the thank you notes. Pride in the Park Follow Up Annette attended the Pride in the Park event, and distributed Women's Commission information to around 87 people at the booth paid for by the Women's Resource Center. She also gave out Women's Resource Center business cards, and encouraged attendees to contact her with issues pertaining to women. She felt the contacts made and the distribution of information went well, and suggested that the Women's Commission share the Women's Resource Center booth again next year. On the same day, Neighbor -to -Neighbor had an event, where the Women's Resource Center also staffed a booth and provided information about the Women's Commission. Only about 35 people stopped by that booth. Teen Parenting Program Update The PSD Teen Parenting Program will be housed at Fort Collins High during the '08-09 school year. Hollie will contact Manny Ortega to volunteer on behalf of the Women's Commission to help gather information in order to determine the best location for this program in the future. Suzanne will provide contact info for Manny. Manny Ortega, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools Work: 2407 LaPorte Avenue 80521 Phone: 490-3011 E-mail: morteaaCDosdschools.oro Youth Member of the Commission Suzanne reported that in order to have a youth member appointed to the Commission, the Council Liaison, David Roy, needs to be supportive. The Commission agreed to invite David Roy to attend either the July or August meeting, to learn about the work of the Commission, and to talk about their interest in having a youth member appointed. Suzanne also reported that the City Clerk's office indicated that if the Commission were interested in increasing the size of the Commission, they'd need to ask City Council to amend their charter. At this time, the Commission is not interested in having the size of the group increased. They would like one of the current vacancies filled with a youth. Shellie moved that Suzanne be instructed to invite David Roy to attend a Commission meeting to talk about a youth member. Marjorie seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Newsletter Sue has not received any articles from Barbara, yet. The Commission discussed having someone else write an article about housing for inclusion in the newsletter. Shellie moved that Sue try to contact Barbara, but if she's not able to provide the article, Annette will contact Wendy Robinson with Neighbor to Neighbor and see if she's able to provide some `fresh' insight into the housing situation here in Fort Collins. Annette seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Sue distributed the template she's planning on using. She asked that Commission members critique the template and get any comments back to her. Sue and Suzanne will try and connect with Barbara to find out how she's doing. Poster Update Suzanne was asked to get some Women's Commission history to Hollie. The Commission expressed interest in a photo of themselves. They will wait until the August meeting for the photo, since Kristen will not be in attendance at the July meeting. Senior Women The Commission began their discussion about issues pertaining specifically to senior women. Some areas of concern for senior women include abuse, isolation, poverty and health care. As part of their July agenda, the Commission will begin discussion on senior women. Suzanne will check with the Senior Advisory Board to find out if the Women's Commission can have some time on the SAB August agenda to talk with them about the Commission's interest and ways to find out about issues specific to senior women. Marjorie will invite Susan Vance to attend the Commission's August meeting — August 20, 2008. Joan had reported via email that CSU had purchased the video recommended by Marjorie at the last meeting. The Commission will talk about possible uses for the video, as part of the July meeting. Other Marjorie resigned as secretary of the Commission, but will remain a member. Commission members were asked to consider taking on the secretary role. Suzanne will continue providing notes until someone else takes on this role. Marjorie also provided to each of the Commission members a copy of her book "Views from the Far Side of the Hill". The Commission expressed interest in a review of the Wonders of Women survey data. Marjorie moved to adjourn the meeting. Shellie seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Meeting was adjourned at 7:40pm. Next meeting: July 16, 2008 215 N.
