HRC July 10, 2008 — Page 2
she does not want to be elected as chair. She is willing to serve as interim until year end
elections. She encouraged current HRC members to volunteer for serving as chair.
Becky O'Donnell stated that the Clerk's Office advertised several times for current board
vacancies. No new applications were received for the Commission on Disability (COD)
and the HRC. These vacancies will be held for the annual recruitment process.
Advertising will begin late August through September. Appointments are scheduled for
December 16.
Government Relations/Kelly. Kelly stated she is continuing efforts to contact the
Colorado Civil Rights Commission (CCRC) to no avail. Kelly will also be monitoring
housing code votes by City Council
Education/Community Outreach Joann
Joann stated they had their education meeting on Tuesday night July 8. They decided
to distribute flyers for Maya's Sunday July 13, 2008 discussion at Mugs about "The
Guru: fact vs. fiction". This is being done as educational follow up to the recent movie
release, "The Love Guru' which has received harsh criticism and is being protested by
Hindu groups.
Flyers were developed and distributed by subcommittee members. Joann asked Maya
to provide a brief synopsis of what her presentation will entail. Maya did a brief
presentation for HRC members about the topic of her discussion related to "The Guru".
Elaine Boni made a motion to support Maya's ability to promote herself as a member
of the HRC as she speaks to the issue of "What is a Guru?" at Mugs on Sunday July
13, 2008. Kent Bryan seconded the motion. The motion was approved 6:0.
• Public Relations & Community Recognition/Cristina
Cristina stated the PR/CR subcommittee met in June to begin working on updating the
HRC and HRA websites. Several CSU journalism student guests attend their
subcommittee meeting. The meeting focus changed to educating the guests about the
HRC, talking about the coffee chats, membership background and their interests in the
HRC. HRC members were able to promote the HRC for possible future membership.
Cristina stated she has a few website updates and stated the focus of their July meeting
is the HRC website. Becky stated she has contacted City MIS staff to make updates to
the HR Award website by adding 2007 and 2008 recipient information and updating the
online application with 2009 dates. Becky also stated Susan Kirkpatrick thanked the
HRC for the generous gesture of the downtown bucks for speaking at the HR Awards
Breakfast, and regretted that she prefer not to accept the stipend and returned it to the
HRC. Becky provided three DVD's of the 2008 Human Relations Award Program for
members to view. Kelly, Elaine and Joann checked out the HR Award DVD's and will
return them at next month's meeting.
5. OLD BUSINESS
Maya was asked to provide an update from James on the Iraqi Youth Leadership Exchange
Program. No further information is available at this time. The HRC will table the planned
press release about the program until further notice.
HRC July 10, 2008 — Page 3
Kelly stated the Deliberative Dialogue training provided information as to how to prepare for
organized talks such as coffee talks, however, more practice forums should have occurred.
Follow up to Karen's requested HRC funding assistance for her to attend the Peace Circle
Training through CSU on July 14. Karen was asked to provide detailed information as to the
training and cost of the Peace Circle Training class at the next HRC meeting. Karen was
absent and no information was provided, therefore, and it was decided that funding
assistance would not be provided at this time.
6. NEW BUSINESS
Maya suggested that the Education/Community Outreach subcommittee consider for future
"coffee talk" discussions, songs from Avenue Q, a musical which addresses a lot of social
issues with sarcasm and wit, as well as, a bit of song and dance with puppets. The musical
itself is coming to Denver September 9-21 and might also work well with the Eracism film
series.
Elaine volunteered to contact Maryanne for an update as to when business cards and the
brochure template will be provided to the HRC.
