Meeting Minutes �r 1
Wednesday October 17, 2007

Attendees: Pat Lewis, Beth Etter, Sue Baccari, Holli Kopp, Barbara Goff
Members absent: Stacey Arnold (excused)
Liaisons present: Marjorie McTaggart
Liaisons absent: Karen Gebhardt
Chair person Beth Etter called the meeting to order at 6:40pm.
Announcements: Suzanne asked that Mary Beth's resignation email be sent to her.
Minutes: Sue motioned that the September 2007 minutes be approved as presented. Barb
seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
By-laws update: A draft version of the updated bylaws was distributed to members.
Under Article II: Purpose, members discussed the benefits and downsides of listing
specific kinds of discrimination which the Commission will address versus using more
generic language to include all types of discrimination. Members agreed to leave the
language as it appears in the draft.
Sue motioned that the bylaws be accepted as presented. Barb seconded the motion. The
motion passed with a vote of: 4 yes, 0 no, 1 abstention
Newsletter Update: The newsletter is being distributed by 211 staff. It has been posted
on the Commission's website on fcgov.com
Feedback has been that the presentation of the newsletter is very professional. Printed
copies have been distributed to Catholic Charities as well as organizations in Weld
County and Windsor.
Refinements for next edition: list the names of the authors of the articles
SAB Update
Marjorie provided an update from the Senior Advisory board, including outreach efforts
between the SAB and the Senior Center Council, the role of liaisons from the SAB to
other boards/commissions, and the invitation received by the SAB to speak to a
gerontology class at CSU.
Legislation Discussion
What role does the Commission want to play in federal, state and local (city and county)
legislation? Does it make sense to task a sub -committee to develop and make some
recommendations to the Commission? Recommendations could address the following:
Are there specific topics the Commission is interested in following and/or influencing?
What are some ways the Commission could gather input from women in Fort Collins?
How can the Commission best provide input to the Council?
Are there other groups in Fort Collins or Larimer County that the Commission could
work with to make a difference?
Legislative Updates: Chip vote occurs this week
Farm Bill includes process for applying for food stamps
Barb will continue providing updates
Workplan Update
Beth will update the workplan to include:
Continue MNW and essay contests
Newsletter
Radio show
Legislative advocacy
Public meetings and advocacy
Working with other boards/commissions and/or other organizations
Essay Contest
Assignments
Holli is chairing the essay contest
Pat will work with Holli to ensure that the private schools and home school students are
aware of the contest and have the ability to participate
Holli will schedule reminders for November
Draft letters requesting donations
Holli will be in touch with Jill for specifics from last year's event
Discussion about which Council member would be the one to invite to speak to the
students
Chair Election for 2008
Sue nominated Pat for Commission Chair for 2008, nomination was seconded by Barb.
After some discussion, the Commission tabled the nomination process until the
November meeting.
Sue moved to adjourn the meeting and Barb seconded the motion. The meeting was
adjourned at 8:38pm.
