Meeting called to order at 6:35pm by Vice -Chair Stacey Arnold.
Stacey asked for a motion accepting the minutes from the June 20, 2007 meeting. Barb
moved acceptance of the minutes as presented. Sue seconded the motion. The motion
passed, unanimously.
Announcements
New members: Mary Beth Lathrop and Hollie Kopp were appointed to the Women's
Commission at the City Council meeting on July 17, 2007. Suzanne sent an email
welcoming them to the Commission. Stacey volunteered to contact them as well.
David Roy, Council Member is planning on attending the Commission's August meeting.
Dann Atteberry, City Manager, is planning on attending the Commission's September
meeting. The Commission asked Suzanne to find out if Darin's visiting other Boards and
Commissions, and if there are specific topics he'd like to talk with the Commission
about.
Updates
Jennifer Rodriquez, the MNW award winner was presented with the $100 gift card. She
gave the gift card to someone she was helping to find housing and a job. The recipient
sent a note of thanks to the Commission letting them know how much the gift meant to
her.
Jennifer Rodriguez has been nominated for the Extreme Makeover home edition on one
of the television channels. She is currently one of 20 finalists in Colorado.
KRFC Update
The Commission hopes to co -host a radio show on KRFC featuring Jennifer Rodriquez,
as the MNW award winner and the Women's Commission. Pat is following all leads
trying to get in touch with someone at the radio station who can help make this happen.
Legislature Update
Barb provided an update on the Blue Ribbon commission for the Governor on Health
Insurance. She indicated that John Kefalas is carrying the topic of health care and the
working poor forward.
Legislation regarding a cap on the interest charged for student loans is being considered.
Information Sharing
Barb mentioned that Loveland is providing training for women interested in running for
elected office. This kind of training is something Barb has suggested the Commission
sponsor for some time. She mentioned that the Women's White House Project would be
interested in working on this effort.
Barb spoke with Mayor Hutchinson about economic issues. He requested additional facts
and statistics.
Newsletter
The first edition of the Commission's newsletter will be on economic well-being.
The target date for distribution is September 2007. A draft will be shared the August
Commission meeting.
First edition will be one page, front and back.
Goal is to have three articles:
Primary article will provide an overview of the economic issues facing women when the
Commission's first report was created in 1985 along with a comparison to the kinds of
economic issues facing women in 2007. Length limit is about 3 paragraphs.
Second article will look at child care — Stacey will create. Limit: about 2 paragraphs
The topic of the third article could include a `call to action', but the members didn't
assign this topic to anyone.
Pat will provide a summary of the commission members.
Beth was assigned to write a summary about the kinds of activities sponsored by the
Commission.
Jill Walusis, former member of the Commission, has volunteered to continue working on
the newsletter. She can be contacted at iwalususafceov.com
Deadline: everyone with a writing assignment will complete their outline and draft and
send to the full Commission membership within 2 weeks for comment.
New Business
Colorado Women's Hall of Fame deadline for nominations is the end of August. Pat will
look at the nomination information on their website to see what's involved with a
nomination. It was suggested that possibly Marcile N Wood, Audrey Faulkner or Jennifer
Rodriguez might be appropriate nominees.
Assignments were reviewed.
Meeting adjourned at 7:50pm. Next meeting is August 15, 2007.
