Radio Panel Discussion on Women in Elected Offices
Panel Discussion set for September 28, 7:30-8pm. At KRFC. Panel members are: Jana
Ley, Marty Tharp, Karen Weitkunat. Panel members were provided 10 questions and
asked to be prepared to speak to those questions. Beth will acquire a short bio for each
panel member and will conduct the introductions for the panel members as well as an
introduction to the Women's Commission. Barb and Tanya agreed to attend and provide
assistance as needed. Beth will check with her contact about the possibility of recording
the event.
Kathay Rennels and Peggy Reevers were not able to participate on the Panel, but both
were interested in being featured in the Newsletter.
Newsletter
The Commission is still interested in finding an intern to assist with the newsletter. The
position had been publicized through CSU but hasn't generated any applicants. Barb
suggested the responsibilities be divided into two different intern opportunities,
graphic/layout as one focus area, and writing/editing as the other focus. Barb will work
with Beth to rework the descriptions. Suggestions were offered about where to publicize
these opportunities and who to work with on campus. Barb will contact the tech
journalism department and the Collegian. Stacy suggested that the person responsible for
doing the newsletter have creative license to work with the graphics and layout. No
decision was reached on this.
Marjorie shared the steps involved in getting something printed — including the steps of
editing and proofing.
Stacy heard back from Paula about ideas for the newsletter and will forward that
information to the Commission. Barb asked about a current email address for Paula.
Stacy will check.
Newsletter Logo
The Commission is also interested in a graphic/logo for the newsletter. A contest or
competition was suggested as a way to gain interest and possible designs. Marjorie
suggested this could be an article in the Collegian. Barb offered to draft an approach and
will share it via email with the commission members. Tanya offered a certificate for a
free massage for the designer of the winning logo.
Budget Update
Suzanne informed the Commission that their budget request was submitted to the City's
Budget Office and the office of the Deputy City Manager, in time for the submittal
deadline. Suzanne was asked to provide a copy of the submitted budget to Karen
Weitkunat, Council Liaison to the Commission.
Tanya asked about the name tags, again. Suzanne apologized and agreed to take care of
them.
New Business
The White House Project is offering training for women who want to enter into politics.
Check out the website for additional information.
AAUW is providing training on women in politics as well. Barb will provide a list of
topics which the AAUW will cover. Shelby will email the site information to Barb who
will distribute it to the Commission members.
Beth was invited to be interviewed as part of a solicitation for new boards and
commission members. The finished product is live streamed on www.fcgov.com
Essay Contest
Stacy will chair the Essay Contest for 2007. She will bring to the November meeting the
timeline for the Essay Contest. She will also contact Cindy (PSD) with the key dates.
Tanya made a motion that was seconded by Pat, that all students living in Fort Collins
and in the target age groups be eligible to participate in the Essay Contest. This motion
passed unanimously. Pat will research the private schools and the home school
organizations.
Prizes provided in 2006 for the winners included trophies, DBA gift cards, Fort Fun gift
cards, Home State Bank savings bond, etc. Teachers received flowers. Shelby will
contact some of the businesses and ask them to support the 2007 contest winners. She
asked for the tax ID number and a letter on City letterhead.
2007 Workplan
The Workplan will be developed at the October 2006 meeting.
Announcements
Marjorie provided an update on the Senior Advisory Board's joint meeting with the
Senior Center Council. Marjorie updated the Commission on the emergency light switch
project, a combined effort between the Triad Board, local law enforcement and AARP.
Commission members wondered about the possibility of making these switches available
to single parents and others who might need them. Barb mentioned the possibility of
collecting cell phones that are still workable, for distribution to those who don't have one,
so they can contact 911 in an emergency. Tanya suggested that if these phones are
collected the plug-in chargers be requested as well.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20pm.
