Mrs. Coffin presided at the regular meeting of the City
Library Board.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
A letter was read from the County Library Board expressing
appreciation for the use of the city circulation desk for
county circulation of books.
An application for librarian was considered. Mrs. Thorn-
burg was instructed to contact the references listed by
the applicant.
Mrs. Coffin read exerpts from an article in "National
Observer" by Bennett Cerf in which he discussed new trends
in publishing books and some trends in reading habits of
Americans.
Mrs. Thornburg reported that to date the two members of
the State Library staff, who are making a survey of the
library, have worked four and five days respectively on
the survey and four or five more days will be required
for completion. All available members of the local staff
have worked all day for seven days assisting with the sur-
vey. Sampling of the collection is being done by checking
every twenty-fifth book on the shelves and every twenty-
fifth book from each day's circulation. This information
will be classified to provide a sample showing the quality,
quantity, and recency of the collection.
A meeting to explain details of the proposed new statewide
library system will be attended by Mrs. Coffin, Mrs. Bennett,
Mrs. Ronco, Mrs. Thornburg, and Mrs. Ward.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Sarah L. Bennett, Secretary
Present,: Mesdames Coffin, Bennett, Ronco_, Thornburg, Ward.
Mr. Harvey, Mr. Strahle.
