FORT COLLINS PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
• April 3, 1974
Regular meeting

Lois Henry, Secretary; Wilson Wilmarth, Louise Ronco, Ex-officio.
Absent: Frank Johnson, Jr. Staff: Larry Webber, Director;
Jane Davis, Assistant Director; Robert Holzfaster.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. in the childrents
room of the library.
Minutes of the March 6 meeting were read and approved.
Mr. Webber reported the application for $ 75,000 of federal funds
had been forwarded to the State Library, distribution to be made
after April 15.
No information was available regarding any county funds being
available toward a new library.
Book bids were received from two companies and about 1800 books
were ordered. The bid was accepted because processing costs
would be less. New books will be placed on library shelves and
• older copies held in storage.
A letter had been received from Mr. Nick Hurley suggesting
branch libraries in the High Schools - a subject previously
given some consideration but not feasible at present.
Fines are due to be increased on April 15, but the question
of "no :fines" is still under discussion.
It is hoped that site selection will be completed by May 1,
also selection of an architect by city council by early May.
$38,000, the regular grant from the State Library will be
available in May. This money, which must be spent by September,
will be used for the collection on tapes of local "oral History".
Mr. Webber also reported possibility of a special grant if inter-
library cooperation could be arranged among city schools, public
library, and CSU. This would be for an inter- or multi -cultural
center probably housed at the public library. The Board
approved further consideration of the project.
Lecture series, four on Anthropology and -three on gardening, had
been well received; the Story Hour Workshop -is progressing
well; Mr. Webber had conducted a Great Books Discussion group at
• the County Jail - an interesting experience.
Ron Stump, new director of High Plains Library System, has plans
to make the system relate more to individual libraries and will
meet with Boards at their convenience.
Other possible projects mentioned for the future are a centralized
catalog of city materials and computerization of circulation and
inventory of the book collection. The computer use, with the city,
should have a high priority in plans for the new building.,
Recent checks of inventory information indicated fewer books were
missing than appeared at first, also that children's department was
not completed. This is to be done at earliest time possible.
Friends of the Library are issuing invitations for a buffet supper
on April 21 at Mrs. Bennett's home honoring Mr. & Mrs. Bill Barker.
Mr. Barker will be the speaker at the annual Library Week special
meeting to be at Lesher Junior High the same evening at 7:30 p.m.
His topic: What to write about between books.
Mr. Watrous recommended that more consideration be given by the
staff to publicize services available at the Library.
City Manager Brunton has notified city departments that planning
for 1975 budgets should be started. A copy of a letter to Mr.
Brunton listing goals for 1975 and a tentative budget was
submitted.
Attention of the Board was directed to possible situations which
could arise as the result of Supreme Court decision on obscenity.
Mr. Webber was directed to check with the city regarding possible
defense for Staff or Library Board.
The meeting adjourned at 10:30 p.m.
The next regular meeting will be May 1, 1974 at 7:30 p.m.
Lois Henry, Secretary
