PRESENT: LIBRARY BOARD - Christine Kneeland, Polly Walters, Don Morgan,
Lloyd Spawn, Catherine Fine; LIBRARY STAFF -- Jane Davis, Robert
Holzfaster, Lynne Heroux.
The meeting was called to order by Board President Christine Kneeland. The
minutes of the September meeting were approved as distributed. There was
no correspondence.
Jane Davis, Library Director, introduced Lynne Heroux, an intern from the
College of Saint Benedicts in St. Joseph, Minnesota. Ms. Heroux is a
senior student using her internship to explore an interest in librarianship
as a career. She will be working at the Fort Collins Public Library
through December 15.
Library statistics for September, 1986, were distributed. Circulation
continues to be up about twelve percent over 1985.
Jane Davis distributed a very complete report of the 1986 Children's summer
programming. Board members will have an opportunity to read the report
during the ensuing month and questions can then be discussed at the
November meeting.
Ms. Davis announced that the first panel discussion session for Wordsworth
'86 was being held that evening and the first speaker, Norma Klein, would
speak at the Lincoln Center on October 23.
Ms. Davis reported that the library has received a $24,200 U.S. Department
of Education grant to continue the Read -Up program and expand it to the
other libraries in Larimer County and an additional $6,000 from the Gannett
Foundation to support this library's adult literacy efforts.
Ms. Davis reported that the Fort Collins Friends of the Library had grossed
$6,800 at their annual used book sale held October 3, 4 and 5 at Foothills
Fashion Mall.
Under Old Business members discussed putting together a coordinated "wish
list" of equipment and materials needed for the library. They discussed
printing a brochure for service clubs and individuals encouraging them to
make gifts to the library. Board members suggested that Diane Hogarty,
Executive Director of the Fort Collins Foundation, be asked to speak at a
meeting so that members might become better informed about how the Fort
Collins Foundation might be used to hold money for the library.
Chris Kneeland reported on the City Council response to Board's efforts to
increase the library materials for 1987. She had attended a Council
Meeting and a Council Worksession. Councilmembers decided to add $20,000
to the materials budget. Library fines will be doubled to take in an
additional $16,000 and library staff will raise an additional $4,000 in
gifts. This means the materials budget for 1987 will be $141,536 - up from
$95,000 in 1986. The Council also directed that the $141,536 would become
the base for materials for 1988. Both Boardmembers and staff need to begin
to document any and all comments made about the library by the public in
preparation for the 11988 budget process.
Under Old Business, Jane Davis reported that the Fort Collins Historical
Society wanted to work with the Library Board to honor Charlene Tresner.
Doris Greenacre, Historical Society President, will be contacting Ms.
Kneeland about this matter.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Jane B. Davis
