BOARD MEMBERS Virginia Ward, Chairperson Catherine Fine, Vice -chairperson Greg Auble Dan Smith Polly Walters Kate Erslev Jerome Roselle PRESENT: LIBRARY BOARD -- Kate Erslev, Virginia Ward, Catherine Fine, Greg Auble, Jerry Roselle, Dan Smith, Polly Walters; LIBRARY STAFF -- Jane Davis, Robert Holzfaster. The meeting was called to order by the Chairperson, Virginia Ward. The minutes of the March meeting were approved as distributed. Robert Holzfaster, Administrative Aide, distributed the March statistical report. Jane Davis, Library Director, reported that library staff is doing a user survey. She also reported that the Friends of the Library had received nine Gift -a -Book endowments as of April 10. Virginia Ward and Catherine Fine reported back to the full membership on the title Cecily G and the Nine Monkeys, by H.A. Rey. A parent had requested the title be withdrawn because of an illustration which he feels gives a subtle message to children that power lines are not dangerous. This title is a children's classic first published in 1942. Polly Walters moved that the title remain on the shelf for public use and a letter sent to the publisher drawing their attention to the illustration. Catherine Fine seconded the motion. It passed with no negative votes. The Board asked Ms. Davis to write to the parent and to the publisher. Virginia Ward reported that Dorothy McDavid would represent the Friends and Greg Auble the Board on the Library Fund Advisory Committee. The other three members will be finalized at the May meeting. Jerry Roselle and Kate Erslev were appointed to an ad hoc committee to plan an event to introduce the fund to the community. They will report at the May meeting. Jane Davis distributed copies of the notes from the Staff/Board retreat held on April 5. The Chairperson asked that the Board plan a follow up discussion on the retreat for the May meeting. Catherine Fine announced that she did not plan to reapply for membership on the Board. She has served two years as an alternate member and a four year term as a full member. Virignia Ward announced that Hewlitt Packard had agreed to fund a new $450 puppet stage for the library. The money will be donated through the Friends of the Library. This gift comes through a grant made by Hewlitt Packard supporting community activities in which their employees are active. Ms. Ward is a Hewlitt Packard employee. The meeting was adjourned.
