Mr. Santiago Jose Martinez of UMAS and Miss Debbie Bueno spoke to the Commission about the Black Beret and its purpose in the Mexican -American community. It encourages the Chicanos to do things together, such as learn their history, cultural background and to take pride in themselves. They are trying to develop a group culture that will unify, not isolate. They are striving for self-identity and consider their goals benificial, not destructive. In the discussion that followed, Dean Olson recommended that if we, as a Commission, are to function effectively, our aim should be to observe, learn and inform others. The secretary was directed to write a letter to Father Ostertag and Mrs. Nancy Landers expressing our appreciation for their years of dedicated service on the Commission. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned with the announcement that the next meeting would be held March 2, 1971, at 7:30 p.m., at 225 Second Street. Respectfully submitted, Mrs. Walter J. Atherly Secretary
