HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuman Relations Commission - Minutes - 03/02/1972CA FORT COLLINS COMMISSION ON HUMAN RELATIONS Special Meeting March 2, 1972 A special meeting of the Fort Collins Human Relations Commission was held at 225 Second Street, Fort Collins, Colorado, on March 2, 1972 Members Present: Mrs. Walter Atherly Rev. James Baird Mr. Wally Bujack Mr. Dave James Mr. John Moore Dr. Parker Preble Mr. Gerald Templer Members Absent: Mrs. Anthony Giron Mr. Luke Long Mr. John Bustos Mr. Ralph Braden Also Present: Mr. Mamadou Ba Mr. Paul Muna Miss Pat Gallegos Member of L of WV The meeting was called to order by the Chairman at 8:00 p.m. Dr. Preble read letter of complaint written by Mr. Mamadou Ba concerning discriminating remarks made by Officer K. C. Williams of the Fort Collins Police Department directly to him on Thursday evening, February 24, 1972, about 11:30 p.m. Dave James made motion that this complaint be given to the grievance and investigation committee for immediate action and report back to this Commission at next meeting. Also, that a letter be written stating that the Commission feels discrimination was made based on facts thatwe now have. Seconded by John Moore; motion carried. Miss Pat Gallegos called Mrs. Atherly for permission to appear before the Human Relations Commission and file complaint against Woodward Governor Company concerning mandatory dress length. Miss Gallegos reported to the Commission that Woodward had directed that all dress length would be 1 inch to 3 inches above knee and no more. If not conformed to, then employee would be asked to leave. Miss Gallegos felt that this so upset the employees as to interfere with their productivity. John Moore felt that employers have right to set down rules of dress for employees. Wally Bujack concurred. It was opinion of Commission that this was not relative to Human Relations Commission's jurisdiction. Parker Preble reported that Federal funds of $2,000 to $2,500 that is available for Police Community Relations have to be earmarked by March or April, 1972, or be returned. Dave James suggested a Police "Happiness Is" party for underprivileged youth. No action was taken. Human Relations 40ssion M Page 2 March 2, 1972 The names of Mr. Seymore Graham and Mr. Bill Cartright were announced as new appointees to Human Relations Commission as of February 2, 1972. Mr. Ralph Nieman appointed by Dr. Chamberlain to take Penn Tate's place on Human Relations Commission - also serves on University Human Relations Commission. Rev. Baird expressed his concern over the junk yard in Andersonville at the old school yard. It is now filling up with old junk cars and is acceller- ating the junk yard situation. Dr. Baird moved that we contact the County Commissioners by letter and express our concern to correct this situation in light of human welfare and community environment.
