HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Board - Minutes - 11/17/1971• Qovember 17, 1971
The Board of the Fort Collins Public Library met in regular session at 7:30 p.m. in
the children's room. Present were Mrs. Sarah Bennett, Mrs. Louise Ronco, Mrs. Lois
Henry, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Watrous, Mrs. Grace Thornburg and Mr. Webber.
Minutes of the October 13, 1971 meeting were read and approved.
Attendance of 130 children the previous week and 130 today plus 14 women at the Story
Hour was reported. These numbers raised a question of capacity of the available
space and what fire department regulations might be.
Coat racks for the Children's Department were again discussed. Friends of the Library
will pay for them. Mr. Watrous moved that the Library Director be authorized to
make necessary arrangements. The motion was seconded and passed.
A letter was read from Mr. Lemoyne Anderson, Director of Library Services at CSU,
regarding the amount of service available to the general public from CSU. This was
a reply to a request for such information by Mrs. Bennett.
Staff work load was discussed. Mrs. Ronco moved that beginning December 1, 1971, for
a trial period (until further notice), the opening hour be delayed until 10:00 a.m.
Monday through Friday. Saturday hours would remain 9:00 to 6:00. A report is to be
given at the Jaunuary meeting. The motion was seconded and passed. This change is
to be tried to give staff extra time for record keeping and other paper work.
It was agreed that a December meeting be omitted.
Each Board member accepted a section of a questionnaire on Community Relations as
set up in "The Trustee Checks His Library". The written answers will be due at the
January meeting.
Mr. Sorbie, CSU Art Department, will present a series of four lectures on American
Art beginning the last week of January.
Mr. Watrous recalled that the library and the museum were both beneficiaries of the
will of Mr. Delano Scott, brother of Clare Scott, and will see what information he
can get about it.
Closing of the Library on December 24 and 31 was approved. All other city offices will
be closed. The motion was made by Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mrs. Ronco, and
unanimously passed.
A "Handbook for Colorado Library Trustees" published by the Colorado State Library was
handed -to each Board member. These had been distributed at a High Plains meeting in
Estes Park on November 4-5. Mrs. Henry and Mr. Webber attended that meeting. The
Handbook contains all Colorado laws applying to libraries.
Mrs. Anne Mathews, Instructor at D. U. Library School, was available at the meeting for
discussion of problems. She reported a Wyoming Librarian had been successful in
using volunteers. Each was asked to sign a contract, served on probation for six
months, was given training for the work, and if the person missed three periods of duty
they were dropped. Recommended reading: pages 44-49 of the Handbook - Freedom to
-" Read.
