Mountain November 9, 2000, 5:30-7 p.m. Powell Phone: Bob Lenk Phone: A regular meeting of the Human Relations Commission was held on November 9, 2000 in the Human Resources Conference Room, 200 W. Mountain Avenue. Council Liaison present: Bill Bertschy HRC Members present: Mary Gomez, Shion Hung, Bob Lenk, Man Oberoi HRC Members absent: Tim Daugherty w/notification Dan Devine w/notification Staff Members present: Angelina Powell, HRC Staff Liaison I. Call to Order. Meeting was called to order by Chairperson Bob Lenk at 6:05 with the arrival of member Shion Hung to create a quorum. II. Minutes. Bob Lenk asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the regular meeting held on October 12, 2000. Shion Hung made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Man Oberoi seconded the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously. III. 2001 Work Plan. With the arrival of Mr. Hung, the commission reviewed the 2001 Work Plan draft notes on which they had been working. Work continued until Man Oberoi made a motion to approve the 2001 Work Plan. Shion Hung seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. • Man Oberoi requested as part of the Diversity Committee's efforts to promote diversity that HRC minutes be sent to the Senior Advisory Board in care of Barbara Schoenberger. IV. Old Business. • Bob Lenk mentioned that he had spoken to Deputy City Manager Diane Jones about joining us with a Larimer County representative to review the changes to the Human Resource Grants process at the Commission's December 14 meeting. • Greg Tempel will be joining the Commission at their January 11 meeting to discuss the proposed ordinance for setting the number of Commissioners for an Appeal Hearing. V. New Business. Council Liaison Bill Bertschy shared information with the Commission about the Board & Commission interview and appointment process taking place in a December timeframe. New Human Relations Commiso._,i Page 2 commission members would be starting in January. He asked for feedback on criteria he and his interview partner (a fellow Council member) should consider when selecting members for the four vacancies on the Commission. Commission members shared their concerns about the number of vacancies and the fact that some of the new appointees did not remain long on the commission. Councilmember Bertschy said that a City level training program was being developed to help the new members. He believed that it was critical that new members become familiar with the mission and goals of the Commission as soon as possible and that it was important to get them involved with projects right away. He also mentioned that the new Council Policy agenda would be set in an April 2001 timeframe and if it was the Commission's desire to influence that agenda, their opportunity would be at that time. • Shion Hung suggests expanding invitation to apply to Multicultural Retreat participants mailing list, and HRC Award nominees. • The Commission would like to work with Barb Spalding in a February, 2001 timeframe to develop training program for Commission: ❑ Team Building (ID individual's strengths, interests) ❑ Diversity Training VI. Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
