New members Ingrid Kolstoe, Dolores Kueffler, Richard Miller and Parker Preble were welcomed to the commission. Introductions were made with each commission member asked to offer unique identifying information about themselves and why they were interested in serving on the HRC. III. Approval of Minutes. Chair Bob Lenk asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the regular meeting held on December 14, 2000. Mary Gomez made the motion to approve the minutes. Shion Hung seconded the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously. IV. Newly Formed Commission Issues. New members had questions about the Human Relations Commission and the Multicultural Corporation. They were interested in learning what role the respective groups played in the community to create an open and welcoming place for all people. HRC Subcommittees. Chair Bob Lenk asked the new members to consider serving on two or more subcommittees. Subcommittees are the Commission's Executive Delegations, Police, Diversity, and Human Relations Award subcommittees. Before the new members made their selections they asked for more information about subcommittee work and meeting times. Current subcommittee chairs will be notifying the full commission on upcoming meetings so those interested in serving on those subcommittees can attend. Training. Several of the new commission members are planning on attending the training (B&C 101 and Legal Issues) being offered for new Board & Commission members by the City Manager's Office the last week of January and the first week of February. In addition to those opportunities, the suggestion was made that the commission consider specific training on Team Building or other topics of interest to them. More discussion on this topic will come at a future date. Human Relations Commis. ,n Page 2 Other issues. Some new commission members were wondering about the possibility of influencing the 2001 work plan. They have areas of interest in serving and they're not sure how that work can be accomplished in a work plan that was already set by the time they started their term. Chair Bob Lenk suggested that opportunities might be found in the general, broad framework of the subcommittee structure. V. 2000 Annual Report. The Commission reviewed the 2000 Annual Report drafted by Chair Bob Lenk. The commission agreed that the report was a well -written, comprehensive look at the work of the commission in 2000. There were no suggestions for changes. Shion Hung made the motion to approve the report for submittal to City Council. Dan Devine and Mary Gomez seconded the motion. Dolores Kueffler asked a question relative to the Commission's efforts to help individuals who might suffer discrimination related to sexual orientation. Chair Bob Lenk offered that while no work was done by the Commission in 2000, they took a leadership role in the drafting of the Human Rights Ordinance and promoting outreach to the community to inform citizens on the question. The citizens of Fort Collins voted against the ordinance (60/40% margin) in 1998 on an initiative that brought the question to the voters after the ordinance was approved by City Council. The motion to approve the 2000 Annual Report was approved by all except for the new members who abstained. VI. Adjournment. Shion Hung made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Dan Devine seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned by Chair Bob Lenk at 7:20 p.m.
