Mason April 11, 2002, 5:30 — 7:10 p.m. Council Liaison: Marty Tharp I Staff Liaison:) Angelina Powell Phone: 221-6525 ` Chairperson: Bob Lenk Phone: 493-5809 A regular meeting of the Human Relations Commission was held on April 11, 2002 in the Commun Room, 215 N. Mason. HRC Members present Shion Hung, Mary Gomez, Ken Gordon Jr., Rita Klepac, Bob Lenk, Man Oberoi, and Parker Preble HRC Members absent Ingrid Kolstoe and Richard Miller /with notification Staff Members present: Angelina Powell, HRC Staff Liaison I. Call to Order. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Bob Lenk at 5:35. II. Approval of Minutes. Chair Bob Lenk asked for a motion to approve the March 14, 2002 minutes. Rita Klepac noted the minutes did not show that she was in attendance. Parker Preble moved to approve the minute with the change. Rita Klepac seconded the motion. The commission voted unanimously to accept with change. 111. Subcommittee Reports. Diversity Subcommittee • Chair Mary Gomez reported the subcommittee met March 20`h and April 3`d. At the first meeting concerns were raised they were not doing enough to promote acceptance and respect for diversity and discouraging all forms of discrimination. At the second meeting they brainstormed ideas for addressing their concerns. Some ideas are: ♦ Get business cards printed to distribute when opportunities arise ♦ Send a mailing to appropriate agencies such as churches, schools and other agencies that explain the mission of the HRC and offer to be of service. • Rita Klepac reported the Foothills Unitarian Church Diversity Film Series Committee has been screening potential films for the 2002 Film Series. Rita described several of the films and noted the committee is quite impressed with the quality of available films. Once their options are reviewed, they'll decide which films will be in included in the series. • The next Diversity Subcommittee meeting is set for 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, 215 Spruce Hall on the CSU campus. Enter the building on the north end. Human Relations Award Subcommittee. Chair Shion Hung reported the Human Relations Award nominations closed March 31. Nominations were received in all four categories (Youth, Adult, Senior and Organization.) The subcommittee is currently in the process of selecting award recipients and planning the program for the breakfast event. After May 1 s', the committee will debrief and make notes for the file on how the process/event might be improved in 2003. The Commission considered the suggestion the outstanding effort of the Rock Youth Group (affiliated with the Summitview Community Church c/o Pastor John Meyer) be considered for special s Human Relations Comosion • Page 2 recognition at the awards breakfast. The Commission agreed their support of the Muslim community at a very tense time after September 11 is worthy of note and Chair Bob Lenk will recognize their contribution with his welcome/introductions part of the program. Police Subcommittee. Subcommittee Member Parker Preble reported the next CRB meeting will take place on April 17. A demonstration of Bean Bag, Sage Gun (rubber bullets) and Pepper Spray will take place at 6 p.m. on the range near the Detention Center. The CRB meeting will follow the demonstration at 2554 Midpoint Dr. IV. Liaison Reports Northern Colorado Multicultural Corp. Liaison Parker Preble reported on the last NCMC meeting. Parker reported on their efforts to recognize and encourage local businesses that provide goods and services for ethnic minorities. Businesses honored were the International Food Market, Las Delicias Market, Caribbean Hair Flair and Sally Beauty Supply. V. Old Business. Citizen Liaison Program Training. Staff Liaison Angelina Powell forwarded feedback from members on the best days and time for CLP training to the Police Department. She received information that Officer Cory Christensen will identify and offer a number of dates so the ones that works for the majority will be scheduled. Applications for the Ride Along portion of the training were distributed. Please return the completed applications witnessed by a Notary to Angelina. If you need a notary, Lt.
