The regular monthly meeting of the Fort Collins Parks and Recreation
Advisory Board was called to order by the chairmen, Mr. C. W. Peterson,
at 7:00 P.M. January 20, 3.970.
Mr. Dan Bailey and Mr. Art March were present as representatives from the
Elks Club. The Elks have raivad approximately $10,000.00 for playground
equipment, which they plan to donate and install in Edora Park. They hope
to raise another $15,000.00 for this project. There was a discussion of
the many new kinds of equipment for playgrounds. The Elks will work
closely with Mr. Phillips to co-ordinate all plans and ideas. It is hoped
that the project can be started this spring.
Mr. Phillips presented possible sites for new park land.
Mr. Stew Case moved that a recommendation be sent to City Council to -
1. Designate the "tree dump" as park land
2. Acquire the 26.9 acres of the Smith property for park land
3. Attempt to provide a "mini park" (a small neighborhood
facility) in northwest Fort Collins.
Mrs. Donohoe seconded the motion and the recommendation was passed.
Mr. Ray French discussed the Huidekoper tract of land. He discussed the
possibility of a park site In conjunction with the school which will be
built in this area.
Mr. Larry James reported that there are 146 basketball teams. Two new
programs, which have been started, are judo and gymnastics.
Mr. Phillips reported that the Dutch Elm disease sanitation program is
under way.
The concession building for Edora Park will be put out for bids soon. Work
is progressing on the now golf course.
There was some discussion concerning the rifle room at Ft. Collins High School.
The room may be used for other purposes. It was suggested that a letter be
written to the school board recommending that the rifle room be kept for
rifle instruction, if it is at all possible.
