October 17, 1972
The regular meeting of the Fort Collins Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was
held on October 17, 1972, at 7:00 p.m.
Mr. C. 11. Peterson, cheirman, introduced Mr. Bill Cropper who is the new men's
recreation supervisor. Mr. Peterson also introduced the new city manager of Fort
Collins, Mr. Robert Brunton.
Mr. H. R. Phillips showed new plans for the Indian Hills park which the Men's
Garden Club has offered to develop at no cost to the city but which will be
maintained by the city. hater during the meeting Mr. J. R. Purse arrived and
discuss--d plans for the arboretum. A fund has been established in memory of
Mr. Glenn Ringhorn to be used for completion of the project. The Rocky Mountain
Botanical Foundation is also cooperating in this development. Estimated cost
is $1200 to $1500. The arboretum is to be planted in the spring and designed
for minimal maintenance. The report was accepted by the Board and will be
forwarded to City Council for approval.
Mr. Wes Sar�eet reported on the suer program. Re pointed out that major
repairs will la necessary on the staias. rg pool. The Trooper program was Suite
si:ccc3sful. ISrs. Jean Helsurg reported that the women's softball league in-
cicded 10 tera:s and two lc.: ues. The Junius tennis program had an enrollment
of more than 50 per cent ever last year and will need to be expanded next summer.
The adult tennis program is continuing into the fall with eight classes. Mrs.
Helburg has nine programs this fall including a new soccer program for 4th,
5th, rnd 6th grade girls. Other programs include the pre-school program,
holiday crafts and candle making, a pre -teen charm program, mixed volleyball,
open gymnastics for junior and senior high students, and a women's volleyball
program which has 13 teems. The ponytail program was successful and may be
further expanded.
Mr. Eill Cropper reported on his summer activities which included man's softball'
(67 teams) and a hula hoop and friabee program. This fall there are 38 JAA foot-
ball teams and 16 flag football teams. A new program in grandstand quarterbacking
for cccarAn is also being offered. The knothole program for football games is
available.
Mr. Tom Frasier reported that the summer youth club program had over 10,000
participants. The senior citizens' program has included dances, bus trips to
points of interest, and other social activities: The high school program for
youth during the school year is making slaw progress because of problems with
organization of students.
Mr. Carl Jorgenson reported on the forestry program. The nursery now has about
1100 trees for future landscaping. A planned unit development was approved.

The Junior Women°s Club will do landscapink on South College Avenue from Drake
Road to the BankCenter.
Mr. Cary Garwood reported on the golf program. Hs estimated about a $1400000
revenue for this year. Membership includes about 1200 members. it is presently
governed by a five -man board.
Mr Phillips reported that land acquisition for the northside park is being
delayed by difficulties in purchasing the land.
Mr. Robert Brunton said an application for $300.000 federal matching funds
for a fral aaing pool is being prepared and will be submitted to HUD. He also
noted that all budgets have been approved by the City Council.
Mr. Phillips has offered to donate a slide no longer in use at City Park to
Harris School pars.
Dr. Al Pettine asked Mr. Phillips for a decision on the fountain at Library Park.
He also noted that elementary school intramural programs are in demand and
Indicated a need for coordination on this between the city and the public schools.
