PARRS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
MI1WTBS OF MERT.ING
Septaiber 1, 1973
The meeting of the Fort Collins Parks and Recreation Department pdvisory Board was
called to order by Gladys Eddy at 7:05 P.M. in the City Council meeting room. New
Board members introduced themselves. Various members of the Parks and Recreation
staff were present to explain their duties including construction, maintenance and
supervision of activities.
Represa_iting Mr. Bob Brunton, City Manager, was Mr. Mike Dilhllio. He presented the
proposed `74 budget for the Parks and Recreation Department. The $931,000 budget is
the largest amount everyearmarked for park. development. City Council will pass on
the budget the end of November.
Mr. Tom Frazier reporvA on recreation programs. Adult programs are experiencing
more rapid growth than children's programs. To accommodate all teams, softball
games will have to be playe on Sunday nights next year, which slows a need for
another softball field. Th concerns and trooper programs experienced a doubling
in attendance. The Senior Citizens Center is now open 5 days a week; their programs
also are showing an increase in growth. Fewer teenagers participated this summer
at the Youth Center.
Mra. Jean Helburg reported on other recreation programs. Girls' soccer and flag
football are two new programs. Junior tennis next year will be taught in the
spring, as well as summer., 40 troopers, ages 14-17 were on school playgrounds to
assist leaders.
Mr. Bill Kane presented proposed plans for a bike pathway, which would follow route
of Spring Creek thj.migh the City. Proposed path would be 711 miles long; 4 to 5 miles
would be within the City. The plan calls for an 8 foot paved surface, thus floodway
easement along the creek could be put to public use. There are only 3 ateas where
path could not stay along the creek. Certain portions could be done soon; completion
would take several years, due to acquiring right-of-way.
H. R. Phillips discussed -
1. Beattie Park
Seeding and now sprinkling system installedI tennis courts to be built
2. Brown Farm Park
Location has been charged to near Blevino School to tie in programs
and gronuds. Ball diamonds and picnic tables have been placed there.
Tennis courts at Blevins w311 be resurfaced; basketball goals will be
in parking lots.
3. New indoor pool
Coat now stands at $725,000; pool lining will be of aluminum.
4. City Park pool
Filter system needs to be replaced at cost of $28,000.
The community education concept was explained by Mr. Frazier as a pooling of resources
of the school syatem and the Recreation Department; the former supplies the physical
facilities while the latter supplies the direction and supervision of programs. Thus
there are many centers where the community can be involved in learning and recreational
programs, rather than just one central building.
,
Mr. Carl Jorgensen said
that Fort Collins has lost only 50 trees out of
10,000 to elm disease.
