Meeting of January 28th, 1975
The regular meeting of Via Fort Collins Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was
called to order by the President, Gladys Eddy, at 7s40 P.M. in the Parks and Recreation
offices. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as presented.
Tom Frazier gave a repers_ on the progress of the Community Education Center which
will be in the old Laurel. School. The School Board has made the building available
for use and the City Council has allocated $10,000 to use to help get the program
started. A council has been established with meAmbers appointed by the school and by
t; a City Cowncil. This Cowunity Education Council will be a sounding board to
Implement the co!m:3mity educa¢ion programs in the social, educational, asLd leisure
a&-eas. This group bee lawn asked to reemimend activities and to give suggestions on
the rethod of implement3sg cormunity education. This cosmi.ttee will decide which
agencies and programs will be held in this building.
The r.my indoor =-kaiag pool has opened with tremendous participation in the
month of Pececber. Altlough there has not been a great dea3 of promotion of the pool,
apprc 1maLeiy 2,340 people participated in the public'sc9ira program during a 12 day
pericd in Deceiaber.
There airs some proklems i hich are being wor1red on is order to provide a safe and
well -'wilt pool. The rails on the wtot&tor area are a hazard since a child could
easily go through the rail and fall 15 feet onto concrete. The Recreation Department
has ordered decorative ariliwork to fill in bet'aaen the rails, and it will be installed
immediately. The paint hand s:arted pealiag and is causing 'a big maintenance problem
and is hecoming very unai.ghtly. The duck around the pool is supposed to be non slide,
lrxt it is very slippery a=,d needs to be corrected. The ;lighting isn't what it should
s be, although it does pass code.. it was felt by Tom Frasier ;that the best approach
"to these problems would be, to closa the pool for three -weeks deriug spring vacation
so that the necessary corrections can be made.
H.R. Phillips reported that the new park shop is complete and that the nest Parks
rind Recreation Beard meeting will be held at the shop,66 tbat;tbe Board can tour the
facility.

Department plans to pl=t trees before March 15th and 'then have these ready for the
Bi-Cant i$1 evsmittee to sell. 1.1i. Phillips has met with residents of the nortb

The Moose Park ea:.,then dam 3s under design now. R.R. Phillips showed the first
drawing and said some abanges *rill be made in the layout.
The Board diacnsaed changing the eseting date of the Board so that it does not
Conflict with City Coarsen meetings. The official meeting date was changed to the
4 h Tce;•�1ay of tl-.a tomb.
Gl.adya Eddy asked the Board for ideas and input an what should be housed its the
old Col3radoaa BvUldin, which has been purchased by the City to be uzed for recreational
P-rog,r=3. B.R. Philliaa has r€:eelvad many requests fromdifferent groups who would
like to have offices wnd programs in the Coloradcan Building. Term Frazier Showed a
Uoor plau of the building 4m& discussed s=Q of the mane ideas staff members had
propcoe3 for the. age o the building. The board resabers asked that E.R. proceed to
devolop plena fox par1w and recreation prc;rams to be housed in the C�)loradoan and to
further enrich axed davelmp recreational programs by utilizing the space in this
ec building. The f1rat priority is to plan rreational programs, since the build
was purchased for recreational use.
