HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Board - Minutes - 03/28/1995CITY OF FORT COLLINS PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES - SPECIAL MEETING Ben Delatour Room - Fort Collins Public Library March 28, 1995 - 12:00 P.M. PRESENT: LIBRARY BOARD: Anne Ostrye-Macdonald, Alan Bednarz, Karen Dornseif, Linda Knowlton, Al Stone ABSENT: Le Moyne Anderson M. Madeleine Wawro CITY STAFF: Linda Saferite, Mike Powers, Carol Clemons, Bob Copeland, Robert Holzfaster, Larry Webber, Ellen Willis, Dean Willms, Kim Crowley, Marjorie Teklits FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY LIAISON: Shirley Chase At 12:00 p.m., Library Director Linda Saferite introduced Library Building Consultant Bob Rohlf who is here to study the feasibility of the reuse of Old Fort Collins High School as a Main Library. Mr. Rohlf showed the outline plan of the original Fort Collins High School including the footing plan and column structure. There are too many columns and they are spaced too close to accommodate library bookstacks. The second floor is not strong enough to hold books. The columns can't be made bigger because the footings would not support them. If the building is designated a historic landmark, windows which are bricked up now would have to be replaced. While expensive, the building could be made into a Library. In addition to costing the reconstruction of Old Fort Collins High School as a Main Library, he will provide estimates for the expansion of the Library on the current site and the cost of a new facility on an undetermined site. Mr. Rohlf reviewed a preliminary site analysis that showed how the current site could absorb a 115,000 s.f. building. Parking would need to be provided on site or nearby property secured. Discussion ensued as to how similar communities had addressed their space needs. It is anticipated that Mr. Rohlf's report will be available for Library Board discussion at their May meeting. The meeting was concluded by 1:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Marjorie Teklits Library Secretary
