The following Library Board members were present: Al Stone, Linda Knowlton, Jack Steele, Jacqueline Wallace, and M. Madeleine Wawro. Library Board Members Absent: Al Bednarc, Anne Ostrye-Macdonald (attending Civic Center Advisory Committee Meeting) Staff Members Present: Linda Saferite, Michael W. Powers, Bob Copeland, Robert Holzfaster, Dean Willms, Ellen Willis, Marjorie Teklits Friends of the Library Liaison: Shirley Chase Guest Speaker: Jack Schanz, Chair, Library Fund Advisory Committee The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by the Chairperson, Al Stone. The minutes of the November 14, 1995 and January 18, 1996 meetings stand as written. There was no correspondence to be read at this meeting. A. General Reports - Linda Saferite The Friends of the Library have approved staff recommendations for funds as follows: an additional $1,500 for the Summer Reading Program, $2,000 for one CD Rom station in the children's area and $150 for a Cinco de Mayo storyteller, totaling $3,650. This is in addition to $6,600 previously approved as follows: $3,500 for the Summer Reading Program, $3,000 for staff training and development, and $100 for staff recognition for a combined total of $10,250. The Friends also donated $18,500 last December for the purchase of CD Rom equipment for the Reference department. A color banner giving recognition to the Friends for their gift will be placed over the CD Rom area and tours will be given as soon as all equipment and materials are purchased and operational. The Library applied for and has received a Fort Fund grant in the amount of $2,500 for the promotion of Public Access Computer (PAC) availability and training. A series of events is planned which will highlight the information technology that is available to everyone at the Library including a series of talks, seminars and training sessions to illustrate the role of technology and to help customers make the most of new offerings. To celebrate National Library Week, the Library will sponsor an information "scavenger hunt" whereby participants can use the library's Public Access Catalogs or the LILAC libraries or they can dial in from home or office to search for the information needed to complete the entry. Everyone who finds all the items on the list will be entered in a drawing for prizes solicited from local merchants. The Library is again offering free training on Dynix, the computerized catalog system, with classes scheduled February 7 and 15, March 6 and 21, and April 3 and 18. These introductory sessions teach customers how to locate material and place reserves by using the on-line Public Access Catalog. Linda Saferite invited Board members to participate in Legislative Day, March 14, at the Denver Public Library. This will be an opportunity to talk to State legislators concerning support of libraries. A report on "Expanded Library Service" appeared in the February 1996 publication for Fort Collins utility customers, "City News". A sample of a postcard book of old Fort Collins scenes from the Library's Local History collection was shown to the Board. These are on sale in the City Museum gift shop. There will be an Open House held on April 1 at Front Range Community College which will focus on the proposed design of the joint library. Members of City Council, the Planning Commission and the general public will be invited to see the design and speak with the architects. Shirley Chase announced that the Friends of the Library are planning a breakfast for members of City Council and the Library Board some time during the week of April 14th, National Library Week. A reference to the CSU library as well as the new joint library with Front Range Community College is being inserted in the Library services video. Added tape and new footage is scheduled to be completed in approximately two weeks. The Library Board was invited to attend an all -staff training session at the Library on March 1. The theme will be Thriving in a Changing Environment. - Update on Mini Library Marketing - Lary Webber A handout was distributed to the Board highlighting statistics since the Monday opening of the Mini Library. There was a 30.1% increase in January circulation (16,325) over December (12,545) and 17.1% January over November (13,941). 187 entries have been submitted since the ''/s Birthday Celebration on December 28th, and 299 new library cards have been issued. As part of the Muti's marketing efforts, ten of the largest 2 Jack Steele said that he believes having entertainment videos in the Library competes with video stores, takes up too much shelf space, and cataloging, checking in/out, etc., takes up too much staff time.. Linda Saferite explained that the public wants and expects the Library to have entertainment as well as educational and informational videos. Bob Copeland also explained that offering free videos to customers helps a certain segment of the population who are unable to afford to rent videos. Linda Knowlton said that schools have occasion to use the Library's videos as well. - Community Awareness Task Force Making the public aware of the Library's needs, what services the Library offers, and maintaining a presence before City Council are among the roles of this task force. Working with the Library Fund Advisory Committee to promote the Library Services video in the community before September is one of the chief goals. Deb Maltby is preparing a script on how the video can be introduced along with answers to questions that may be asked. - Capital Improvement program Task Force This task force did not have an opportunity to meet since the last meeting; a report will be given at the next Board meeting. - City Plan feedback: Community Vision and Goals 2015 Mike Powers told the Library Board that this document becomes the goals and objectives that everything else flows out of and provides a philosophy to follow. The Board was advised that any comments they may have are due February 14th. Linda shared that a Cost of Services policy that could result in additional library revenue is being considered at the February 13 City Council Work Session.
