Art In Public Places
Susan Ison gave a presentation describing how the
program in Loveland works and a brief history.
Following her presentation, the Board began
discussing the newly revised Fort Collins Art in
Public Places ordinance. Due to time constraints,
the Board voted to hold a special meeting Wednesday
October 20 at 5 PM at the Lincoln Center to discuss
Art in Public Places.
The following are details of Susan Ison's
presentation:
Loveland's Art in Public Places program followed the
success of the High Plains Arts Council art shows.
Their City Manager and Mayor took the lead and it
passed City Council with one dissention.
Works of art are juried through a Visual Arts
Commission who serve for periods of three years.
The commission can set up juries of 5-7 people
to review individual projects.
Most of their art donations come from the High
Plains Arts Council. High Plains is then
responsible for maintenance for three years then
the City takes over. 86.5% of the collection is
from donations.
They have started to receive memorial donations.
Loveland's collection is worth approximately
1.6 million dollars. They have 87 pieces of art
inside public buildings and 63 pieces of art outside
public buildings.
Most of the time works of art are placed in the
buildings which contributed the 1%.
Utilities are included in the 1% ordinance.
Their City Council appoints the visual arts
commission and City Council doesn't approve works
of art.
Money is escrowed from the 1% for repair and
maintenance.

VI. Riverwalk Presentation
Bruce Hendee was to do a presentation. In his
absence the Board discussed the Riverwalk proposal
and its relation to the Cultural Plan. Consensus

Hendee will make the presentation at the October
meeting.
Jennifer Sterling moved to send a letter in
support of the Riverwalk and the cultural plan.
Kathryn Stubler seconded.
Passes unanimously.
VII. Cultural Plan Update
This item will be discussed at the next meeting.
VIII. City/CSU arts facility meeting
Staff presented the findings from the CSU/City
committee regarding the possible sharing of future
facilities. This group is concentrating on whether
a joint facility could work. They are not
discussing funding or possible sites. Given certain

dressing rooms, etc. the committee feels such a
partnership could be feasible.

architectural park. This is a collaborative effort with the CSU Center for Stabilization
and Historic Building Reuse.
