Fort Collins Museum Report

EXHIRITS
The Fort Collins Museum was recognized by the Brown Rrothets at their recent banquet for the proto type
exhibit La Gente: The Hispanics of Fort Collins. Their annual tournament attracted 160 players.
Many of their out-of-town guests toured the exhibit over the weekend as a result of their recognition.
MU has arranged for several groups of Hispanic high school students to view the La Gente exhibit. 170
high school participants from throughout the US. attending a NU sponsored Leadership Program and
toured the museums exhibit. In the upcoming summer weeks, Hispanic youth participating in MU
sponsored programs will be touting La Canto. Our new exhibit is called Historic Images of Latimer
County and Is currently on display in the Overland Trail Room.
EDUCATION
Rendezvous and Skookum Day was held July 12th. Michael Gorgan did a terrific fob of orchestrating
the event. We received good publicity coverage from the various media sources. I heard lots of comments
from adults who expressed how much fun they were having and what they were lemming from the
demonstrators. In addition, we had many visitors come who were dressed up in historic costumes which
added to the flavor of the event. More than 70 volunteers gave generously of their time before, during
and after this community event on behalf of the museum.
COLLECTIONS
Local radio personality Phil Walker hosted members of the George Reach American Legion Post on his
radio talk show prior to the 4th of July. Ms. Judy Kob was listening and remembered a letter she had
found which was written by George Beach to her mother-in-law, Catherine Summerville Kob. She called
into Phil's talk show and he urged her to give the letter to the Fort Collins Museum which she did the very
next day! Andy Masich, Colorado Historical Society vice-president consulted with the museum staff
while reviewing our excellent military collections. Mr. Masich recommended interpretive themes and
suggested priorities for the conservation of some of out rare historic objects.
SHOP
The Museum Shop received its first order from the museum's home page. The customer was a woman
from Texas who ordered cards featuring literary authors. Shop sales doubled this year, when compared
to last year, for the Museum Shop booths at Rendezvous/Skookum Day and the 4th of July events in
City Park. We continue to distribute our museum products (Cache la Poudm river posters, bird houses and
postcard books) to area businesses to increase sales to benefit the museum.

Dear Ms. Greene:
On behalf of the City of Fort Collins' Cultural Resources Board (CRB) I would like to extend our thanks
for your participation in the Fort Fund, Fund II granting process. The insight that you provided us was
very helpful and we look forward to further cooperation between our two groups.
The granting session proceeded quite smoothly and most of the applicant groups were present to make a
short presentation. These presentations and their subsequent question and answer periods help us a great
deal in our final determination for recommendations to City Council.
As the enclosed Agenda Item Summary submitted to City Council shows, we recommended the following
allocations for Fort Fund, Fund II (listed in $ amount order):
1. New West Fest $ 2200
2. Blades of Steel 2000
3. First Night 1600
4. Night Walker Exhibit 1500
5. FAST ABC Meet 1400
6. Museum Exhibits 1000
7. Resolution Rum 1000
8. Historic Home Tour 1000
9. FAST Fall Open Meet 600
$12300
Held in reserve for January funding session 3397
$15,697
As you can tell, our recommendations did vary slightly from the recommendations that you provided as.
There are several reasons that I will try to address.
Due to the official Fort Fund guidelines, we were unable to fund the Downtown Business Association
more than the maximum of $5000 per year. They had received $1200 during the January 97' funding
session and therefore were limited to a total of $3800 this session. The CRB allocated the majority of
this amount to New West Fest, as you had recommended After much discussion the group
determined that the First Night celebration has a lot of potential to draw out of town visitors and so
the event was included in the Fund II group. We would have liked to recommend additional funding
to both events but we needed to comply with the guidelines. During the next year we will reevaluate
the maximum amount allowed for groups like the DBA.
Blades of Steel was allocated $2000, which represents a doubling of the past funding for the event.
• We agreed with your assessment that the Night Walker Exhibit holds great potential and therefore
funded this event $1500 out of Fund II and $1800 out of Fund I.
• The FAST Meets were funded out of Fund II as you recommended
• The Museum Exhibit application was for exhibits from August through February, not just for the
Poster Exhibit. Therefore we funded them $1000 out of Fund II and $1000 out of Fund I.
• We funded the Resolution Run $600 out of Fund II, close to your recommendation.
• The CRB funded the Historic Homes Tour $1000 out of Fund II, similar to your original
recommendations.
• We agreed with your assessment that the Homecoming Parade does not in itself draw great numbers
of hotel stays to the Fort Collins area. We therefore recommended funding for the event out of Fund
I, not Fund II.
We agreed with your recommendations to hold in reserve a smaller amount than we had originally
discussed The $3397 for the reserve fund represents 21.6% of the total amount available in Fund II. We
plan to hold this amount at least until the next funding session. We will eventually allocate the money to
a worthy event. The CRB discussed having an open `opportunity fund". We will discuss this further
when we reevaluate the guidelines within the next year.
We have submitted our funding recommendations to City Council for their approval. We greatly
appreciate the opportunity to work with the Convention and Visitors Bureau, as well as the Fort Collins
lodging industry, in the Fort Fund process. Our two groups are essentially dedicated to the same goal;
promoting Fort Collins and the exciting events that occur here. We believe that communication and
cooperation between our groups is essential.
Again, thank you for your contribution and the insight that you provided us. Your recommendations were
very helpful and we look forward to future interactions. Please feel free to contact me with any questions
you may have.
Sincerely,
6Y 12Gt✓' u9 C1,

Dear Members of the Cultural Resources Board:
On behalf of the Night Walker'97 Art Exhibition Board of Directors and the Night
Walker Board of Directors I want to thank everyone on the Cultural Resources
Board for the recommendation that the Night Walker'97 Annual National Juried
Art Exhibition receive a Fort Fund grant for this year's program. `
For Night Walker; this recommendation is not only a matter of financial support.
Equally important is the recognition of this program as a quality"contribution to the
cultural life of Fort Collins in general and to the ethnic and cultural diversity of our`,
town. For everyone who has worked with Night Walker over a period of time,
your recommendation is also indirectly an acknowledgment of the work of Lewis
Trujillo, Founder and Executive Director of Night Walker., Regardless of the
efforts of other volunteers, his untiring efforts and personal sacrifices have made
this national juried art exhibition' possible simply by keeping the organization afloat
and growing over the years.
We will continue our efforts to identify sponsors for our program within the Fort
Collins business community. Your recommendation may even provide new
opportunities for our program. Thank you for recognizing our efforts. We will do
our very best to provide an exciting and unique, exhibition, and hope that the
individual members of the Cultural Resources Board will have an opportunity to '
visit and enjoy Night Walker'97.
Sincerely yours, -
