for the meeting. Staff will take the minutes of the meeting in the absence
of the Board secretary.

Preble.

City Council Liaison
President Sample announced that Councilman Chuck Mabry will be the new
Council liaison to the Golf Board, replacing Mayor Ed Stoner.
SouthRidge Greens Golf Course
The Board, staff, and guests thoroughly discussed SouthRidge and talked
about the potential options we would like to review. Staff provided an
overview and historical perspective. Roger said he feels Council wants the
Golf Board to take a more active role in the management of SouthRidge
Greens Golf Course and hopefully Councilman Mabry can provide us with some
specific direction along those lines. Staff provided the Board with the
April monthly report prepared by SouthRidge for the City. The Board would
like to continue receiving these reports. There will be further discussion
at future meetings regarding the Board's role with SouthRidge.
1989 Fees and Charges Preliminary Philosophy Discussion
Staff and Board members discussed various options. Tom Skillman said that
significant changes to our fees could impact SouthRidge play, which could
then cause a crunch on Collindale and City Park Nine. Bill Metier asked
what is our philosophy, profit or service, or a combination. Tom said he
still fully supports annual passes, but does not feel they would be
appropriate for SouthRidge because of the large construction debt. Dick
Zubradt is concerned about Saturday tee times and the ability to get a
reservation. With regards to fees, he said why fix them if they aren't
broken. He also said golf is a great teacher of temper control for youth

and he would not want young people to turn away from the game because of
money. He said the Parks and Recreation programs and golf programs in Fort
Collins are great and probably some of the best products out there for the
dollar. Steve Jouard asked staff to check out how well the Longmont
experiment of adding a per play fee to annual passes has worked. With
regards to the preparation of the 1989 budget, the Board and staff feel
that maintaining the existing system is probably the best alternative.
Other Business
- Jerry P. Brown referred to his letter to Doc Pike regarding his request
to name the City Park Nine Clubhouse after Dick Smeltzer. He noted that
the Women's Golf Association unanimously voted to not approve such a
change, and Jerry told Doc that he does not plan to pursue this issue
any further at this time. The Board had no objections.
- Jerry noted the letter from the City Park Nine Women's Golf Association
thanking us for the clubhouse improvements.
- Tom Skillman mentioned the comments made by Councilman Winokur at the
recent work session where he praised the efforts of the Golf Board. Tom
said the accolades should also include the maintenance staff, pro shop
staff, concessionaires, and administrative staff.
- President Sample thanked Steve Jouard for writing the letter to City
Council on behalf of the Board. Steve did an excellent job.
- President Sample also thanked Henry Fry for his efforts and those of the
men's association, as well as Dot Hoff and the work of the womens'
associations on the petition. Henry and Dot deserve special recognition
for all their help.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:22 p.m.
