MINUTES:
The minutes of the April meeting were approved as written.
BUSINESS ITEMS;
* Lu announced that the HRC has obtained the available
information on city commissions regarding diversity of
representation and will pursue a study of the results.
* Sharon announced that per Debra Ruybal-Mascarenaz's
research, the Library does subscribe to Ms. magazine and
intends to continue its subscription due to readership and
interest in the publication.
* There was discussion about the Cultural Diversity
Conference sponsored by the City in April, and of the fact
there were not representatives from the Women' Commission.
Interest was expressed by a number of members in attending the
second conference scheduled for this fall in November. As
this conference approaches we will make information available
to these members and hope to have good representation from the
commission.
* Audrey brought brochures regarding the upcoming Forum on
Non Violence and asked if any members had interest in
attending. It was decided that the Commission will support
the opportunity for one or two members to attend (provided
there are sufficient funds in the budget.) Members interested
should contact Audrey as soon as possible. (Audrey and Sharon
will verify there is money in the budget for this support.)
* Audrey passed out a letter from Dr. Giles T. Rafsnider
regarding comments made about women by Rush Limbaugh.
Rafsnider feels these types of comments "create hatred and
distrust at the national, regional, state and local levels."
In the letter he requested that this issue be brought to the
attention of the Commission at our regular meeting. Brief
discussion followed about possible action the Commission may
consider in response. While there was general agreement this
type of negative rhetoric is unacceptable, no further action
was planned.
PROGRAM:
A panel of seven guests -- educators representing local schools --
provided information and discussion regarding the issue of gender
equity in education. They were extremely informative in helping us
to understand this issue in general and how it may relate to our
study.
REPORT:
JoAnn Ginal provided an excellent and very informative report on
the Women's Health Conference at which she represented the
Commission.
Doreen Kemp reported on the Executive Study Committee. The
committee did not meet at their last scheduled meeting time, but
will meet on June 7, 1995 and report on this meeting at the June
Commission meeting.
* We will not renew the Ms. magazine subscription
* we will sponsor one or two members in attending the
Community Forum on Non -Violence
ACTION ITEMS:
* Regarding the upcoming elections, members are to contact
Carolyn Duff by May 29, 1995, regarding their interest in
running for office for the next term.
