HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Board - Minutes - 04/17/1984CITY OF FORT C 0 L L I N S PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES -- REGULAR MEETING, APRIL 17, 1984 -- 7:00 p.m. BOARD MEMBERS: Lloyd Spawn, President Christine Kneeland, Vice-president Jerry Johnson Don Morgan Sarah Bennett Tom Sigl Polly Walters PRESENT: LIBRARY BOARD -- Lloyd Spawn, Don Morgan, Jerry Johnson, Sarah Bennett, Tom Sigl, Polly Walters; LIBRARY STAFF -- Jane Davis, Robert Holzfaster. The meeting was called to order by the President, Lloyd Spawn. The minutes of the March 1984 meeting were approved as distributed. Jane Davis read a letter from Lisa Blankenship, Secretary, Loveland Public Library Board of Trustees, announcing that the April 12 meeting of repre- sentatives of the public libraries in Larimer County had been postponed and would be held at 7:00 p.m. on May 10 at the Loveland Public Library. Jane Davis and Lloyd Spawn will attend that meeting from the Fort Collins Public Library. Mark Roloff, an inteen with the City Manager's Office, presented a group of slides showing the capital improvements package to be funded by a quarter cent increase in the city sales tax. This issue is on the ballot at the May 1 city election. The library director distributed the statistical report for March 1984. Total materials circulation for March was highest in the library's history. Mrs. Davis also reported that gifts for the 1984 summer programming for children had been received from the Fort Collins Friends of the Library, Knights of Columbus, Woodward Governor Trust, Alpha Delta Kappa Phi, Unit #4, American Legion Auxiliary and Fred and Judy Bodenham. The Friends of the Library have also committed an additional $500 to the newspaper microfilm replace- ment project. Under Old Business Don Morgan moved that the Library Board endorse the passage of the quarter cent sales tax for capital projects on May 1. Jerry Johnson seconded the motion. It carried. Mr. Spawn asked Mrs. Davis to write to Mayor Horak informing him of the Board's support with copies to the news media. Mrs. Davis reported that Darek Johnson had been hired to coordinate outreach services for this library and the Loveland Public Library. She also reported that Larimer County will submit an amended contract for library services to out of city residents. The original contracted amount of $37,806 will be reduced by about $9,500 because of a mathmetical error in figuring the payment. -2- Amended contracts will also be sent to Estes Park and Loveland Public Libraries. Also under Old Business the board members asked Mrs. Davis to again remind the Streets Division of the City that stripping lines for parking around the library need to be repainted. Under New Business Mrs. Davis reported that 1985 budget preparation was under way. Excluding the book budget and salary costs, the 1985 target budget allowed only a 3 percent increase over 1984. The 1985 proposed budget is due May 11. The Children's Summer Program 1984 will begin June 11 and run through August 11. School visits to publicize the activities are now being set up and the calendar of events is being printed. The Volunteer Tea, held annually to honor library volunteers, is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on May 9. Board members asked that the library director write a letter of support from the Board for a grant proposal to the Colorado State Library for funds to establish a circulating videocassette collection. This is a cooperative grant with the Estes Park and Loveland Public Libraries. Board President, Lloyd Spawn, reported that the Exchange Club, of which he is a member, is willing to place in the library a permanent display entitled "Freedom Shrine." There are currently two such displays in Fort Collins - one in the Larimer County Courthouse and one in Poudre High School.
