PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
MINUTES -- REGULAR MEETING
JUNE 11, 1935 -- 7:00 p.m.
BOARD MEMBERS: Lloyd Spawn, President
Christine Kneeland, Vice-president
Jerry Johnson
Don Morgan
Polly Walters
Catherine Fine.
PRESENT: LIBRARY BOARD -- Lloyd Spawn, Christine Kneeland, Jerry Johnson,
Polly Walters, Catherine Fine; LIBRARY STAFF -- Jane Davis, Larry
Webber, Robert Holzfaster.
The meeting was called to order by the President, Lloyd Spawn. The minutes
of the previous meeting were approved as distributed. Mr. Spawn read a letter
from Mayor Barbara Rutstein stating that she had been reappointed City Council
liaison to the Library Board.
Library statistics for May 1985 were distributed. Jane Davis, Library Director
reported that the first floor remodel project was on schedule and going well.
She also reported that the curb replacement on Oak and Peterson, though behind
schedule, was going well. Both projects should be substantially completed by
the July meeting.
Under Old Business, the group acted upon two book reconsideration requests.
Polly Walters and Christine Kneeland had met with Ellen Willis, Children's
Librarian, and discussed Benjamin and Tulip, by Rosemary Wells. They recom-
mended the title be retained for public use. Christine Kneeland made that
motion. Catherine Fine seconded. The motion carried. Christine Kneeland
said that in view of the concern about child and family abuse of the person
making the reconsideration request she had talked to Barbara Chase, Safehouse
Director, about obtaining a list of titles on that topic appropriate for use
with small children. Ms. Chase was pleased to be contacted and will get a
list of titles for us from the psychologists who work with the Safehouse
residents. Christine Kneeland and Catherine Fine had met with Kathy Murphy,
Adult Services Librarian, and discussed These Lawless Worlds #1: The Love
Machine, by Jarrod Comstock. They recommended to the full board that the title
be retained for public use. Christine Kneeland moved that the book remain on
the shelf for public use. Polly Walters seconded the motion. The motion
carried. Jane Davis was asked to write to each of the people making recon-
sideration requests informing them of the Board's decision.
Jane Davis reported that the kickoff for the Summer Reading Program was
Saturday, June 8, and was very successful. By late afternoon June 11 over
1,000 children had signed up.

Under New Business, Larry Webber, Media Librarian, discussed the selection
process for audiocassettes. Board members are concerned that hard rock audio-
cassettes with pornographic lyrics might inadvertantly be added to the collec-
tion. Mr. Webber said that he and his staff would keep their concerns in
mind. He also informed the group that the library is buying more Christian
records and tapes in direct response to user requests.
The group discussed at length the concerns of local videocassette dealers
over the competition they perceive from the Larimer County Video Cooperative.
They also discussed Councilman Estrada's concern that the $2.00 videocassette
service fee and the lack of availability of VCRs for public use is discrimi-
natory in the sense that low-income residents might not be able to take ad-
vantage of the program.
Board members decided that before making a recommendation to the City Council
on these matters they would like to set up a meeting with the videocassette
dealers to discuss the problems and clarify the competition question from
both sides. This could be done at the July meeting or before if necessary.
Jane Davis will inform the City Manager's office.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Jane B. Davis
