David Siever - Lincoln Center
-Introduction of new staff members; Cindy Ryk and Ellen Martin.
-Cindy Ryk, Scheduling Coordinator - Mrs. Ryk worked with the City
at the Senior Center and also set up the books and scheduling
process at Raintree Adult Community.
-Ellen Martin, Assistant Director of the Mariana Gallery on the
UNC campus for five years with a turnover in exhibits every
two weeks. Ms. Martin also taught classes at UNC. She passed
around the schedule for the art exhibits for the rest of the year
and spoke briefly about the current exhibits. The major upcoming
exhibit will be Claes Oldenburg, from the John Powers collection.
-Board members introduced themselves to the new staff members.
-Theatre Tour - there will not be a New York trip this year since
the conference that Mr. Breimhorst and Mr. Seiver attend is too
to Christmas. There will be a London Theatre Tour offered instead
with Mr. Curfman helping with suggestions. This tour will be over
Spring Break, 1987.
-Mr. Breimhorst and Mr. Siever will be attending the WAAA Booking
Conference in Seattle this September. Funds for their travel come
from donations from the New York trip and other trips offered.
-Rates - there has not been a meeting concerning the rates. The
staff is looking at all the rates to submit a new proposal to
Council. Mrs. Ryk will be working on this and a draft will be
Brian Moroney - Museum
-Skookum Day, the previous Saturday, was a great success with
about 2200 people, the largest crowd ever. Musical presentations
added a lot, and staff is to be congratulated on their efforts.
-The "Artist on the Bucking Horse" exhibit is up and this is the
first design by Mr. Curfman since his return. Brian complimented
him on the show.
-Anniversary Celebration on August 20th will have a military theme
and presentation of Museum items. A noon presentation will be
offered.
-Agnes Dix attended a workshop on the Museum's role with the school
district and came away with some good ideas. We actually have a
very good working relationship with the local school district.
-Karen Eberhart and Mr. Moroney have been working on a collections
policy that will be presented to the Board when complete. This is
part of the accreditation process.
-Mr. Moroney and Jane Davis have been working a a system of retrieval
of items that have been moving back and forth between the Museum
and the Library. There will be an offical listing of what is
in each area and where it came from in order to keep track of
all items.
Historic Preservation - Christine Jones commented on the project
that the Historic Preservation Office has started. Edwina
asked the Board to send additional comments to their office.
Sculpture Garden - David Siever
Mr. Siever presented the final design for the sculpture garden.
This project will be done entirely from donated funds with the
Junior Women's League helping with the fundraising. The Design
Committee has already approved the design. The Parks Department, who
take care of the grounds, has also been involved in the project.
There will be a committee of both artists and community people
who will review and schedule the sculpture shows.
VI Historic Preservation - Old Fort Site Signage- Edwina Echevarria
Mrs. Echevarria gave a presentation on her research into signage
for the old fort site. After considerable discussion, it was
decided to form a committee to review the recommendations. The
committee will consist of Michael Griffith, Jack Curfman, and
Christine Jones. Mr. Moroney will come up with a proposal for
wording for the signs.
VII Other Business
A. Pat Dice - Ms. Dice presented the Board with a proposal
concerning a mural for the City. The Board decided that since
it is primarily an advisory board without direct funding, they
were unable to help her with the project. Several suggestions
were made as to possible alternatives. The Board thanked Ms.
Dice for taking the time to speak to them on the project.
B. Discussion of Art Display Idea - Ruth Hornberger-
Mrs. Hornberger updated the Board on the proposal as discussed at
the last Board meeting. Due to circumstances, see attached letter,
the project has been cancelled. The people involved will now
devote their energies into a show for next year. Mrs. Hornberger
thanked the Board for their interest and expressed hope that they
would help next year.
C. General -
Mr. Siever announced that a liaison to the Board from the Council
has not as yet been appointed. He will advise next month.
Mr. Burkett, the new City Manager, has expressed willingness to come
to a meeting. Mr. Siever will advise as to a convenient time.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Green
Secretary

Mr. Will Huitt
President
Fort Collins Arts and Humanities
and Board Members
Avery House

Ft. Collins, Colorado, 8052I
Dear Mr Huitt and board members,
P.V.A.L. wishes to thank Ft. Collins
Arts and Humanities,on behalf of our membership and the
two hundred area artists that had planned to participate
in the proposed September Art Exhibition and sale that was
to take place in Old Town Square and neighboring Streets.
We thank you for your encouragement,
vision, and the hard work, on our behalf,as shown by Mrs.
Catherine Garcia.
We had hoped that by featuring
only Fine Art,no crafts,in a large Open Art Exhibition ,
and using catagories for specification of artists works,
to offer Fort Collins mass citizenry the opportunity to
begin an involvement with local artists and local art,
that woulO serve as the basis for starting a profit
making art and tourist center in Northern Colorado.

We had also hoped that by scheduling this exhibition in September
which would focus citizenry attention on Fine Art, that the
F.C.A.H. fund raiser and art exhibit in October would benefit
by this focus. Nhich as repeated messages through advertizing
is used tnOay, to focus the attention of a very busy public on
an event or proc'uct.
As you know, P.V.A.L. volunteered to pay for the
costs of the exhibition, with the artists help.
And the artists themselves volunteered to work
with P.V.A.L. to make this evening outdoor first --a true grand
event. Eighteen committees have been ready and rarin to go
since June 24.
This letter cannot begin to discuss all of the
work, effort, meetings, that have already happened.Novel, new
ideas for posters, advertizing, promotion .
Letters already sent, to ether areas, other
institutions to get those citizens in those areas, interested
and looking forward to this planned event.
(Upon approval of this proposal, by city,
business, and artists.these letters would have been followed
by invitations to this first outdoor evening art event).
We needed several things from city, business
and represenatives from Old Town Square, in order to get
city, business and the mass public involved.
We are very happy to say that the city, through
it,s staff Mrs. Mackafee in particular, and the goon' will
and interest of many council members, ...We were able to
solve the problem of lighting.
We are also happy to say that every person we
. 3

contacted within the city structure from the mayor to
secretaries mere enthusiastic and saw the merits of our
proposal.
We are also happy to say that Mrs. Victoria Hilton director
of '?ld Town Square was enthusiastic and offered us the full
use of Old Town Square, plus pre -registration areas, plus
the full use of a building in the event of rain, plus a
hundred and one little solutions to needs and problems
that such a large show entails from lavatory facilities
to parking facilities to storage overnight space for
artists paintings. She was indeed a pleasure to work with.
So many dedicated people took time, out of
very busy schedules to try to help us make this event happen.
Mr. David Seiver director of Lincoln
Center was most helpful. He worked closely with city staff
to solve the lighting problem and offered use of the
T,incoln Center for the many, many, committee meetings that
would have had to be held between July 2I and Sept. 5.
In truth, every need for the proposed Art
Exhibition was met within the necessary time frame, but
one. We had ap
proached Mr. Bill Harper, representing
the Chamber of Commerce with our proposal, several months
ago. We talked at some length regarding the need for
the purchase prize awards and the need to begin to collect
art by local artists, that would be owned by the citizens
of Fort Collins.
He was most enthusiastic and delighted with
the idea of having the Chamber and the citizens of Fort Collins
4. •
choose the art that would someday represent the artists
artists living and working here in this year of 1986.
rdr. Harper stated he forFaw no problems with the Chamber
purchasing the three paintings,..value of purchase prizes
to be $200. each for the citizens of Fort Collins, to be
hung in public buildings, until some time in the future
when they would be permanately housed in a Fort Collins
museum of Art.
He was to get back to us before the third week of July.
Unfortunately, Mr. Harper went on vacation, and we die not
receive confirmation from the Chamber of Commerce, regarding
the purchase prizes.
This made it necessary to cancel the proposed Art Exhibit.
This is most unfortunate,.Creating a viable profit making
Art and tourist market, takes much time, hard work and
dedication. In the end however, business, artists, city
and community citizens all benefit in real economic ways.
We sincerely hope that all of the planning and
programming will not be wasted.
It has already been suggested to us, that we
now use this information, in the programming of events
for fine art in the proposed Arts Festival for next year.
We think this has much merit.
We believe that a large, OPen evening, Fine
arts exhibition would do much to enhance, the interest
and atmosphere of the proposed Arts Festival for 1987.
We will work towards having more purchase prizes
for the artists, and more artists participation.
We hope that F.C.A.H. will support us and
work with us to make this Fine Arts outdoor exhibition
an important part of 'a I98^ Arts Festival.
Sincerely
Ruth McKee Hornberger
