The following members were present: Joan Day, Ayleen Burns, Loren Hooper and Fran Johnson Board Members Absent: Bruce Hendee, Corinne Govan and Jennifer Beccard Staff Members Present: Mike Powers, CLRS David Siever, Lincoln Center Jill Stilwell, Fort Collins Museum Evan Hyatt, Lincoln Center Guests: Fred Jacobs, Convention & Visitors Bureau AGENDA I. Call to order - (12:09 p.m.) Fran Johnson II. Consideration of agenda - No changes. III. Consideration of Minutes of August 31, 2000 - A change was made to amend a typographical error. Performing Arts Center update - City staff will be working with Mr. Halsey North early next year to begin the fundraising campaign. A grant proposal has been submitted to the Wilkins Trust to cover the costs of Mr. North's fees. The goal of the campaign is to raise at least $10 million. A rendering of the proposed facility is needed for the fundraising campaign. Staff is planning to have the architectural firm of Van Dyke, Pace, Westlake design the rendering. The rendering will be detailed enough to help potential donors visualize what the Performing Arts Center could look like without being too precise. Representatives of the City are continuing to meet with representatives of Colorado State University to determine the possibilities of a shared performing arts theatre at CSU's Performing Arts Campus. CSU has hired an architect to determine how to maximize the proposed performing arts spaces. Planning is also going on to try and facilitate the needs of local arts organizations at CSU's Performing Arts Campus. V. 2001 Work Plan - The Board reviewed a draft of their 2001 Work Plan and made changes. (see attached Work Plan) Hooper. Update on memo re: amendment to the City Code - A memo to City Council regarding possible changes in the City Code relating to the function of the Board has been withdrawn by the City Attorney. VII. Review of Mission Statement - A discussion on possible changes to the Board's mission statement was tabled until the regular meeting in February, 2001. VIII. Meeting time for January Fort Fund Session - The Fort Fund grant session in January is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24. The Board will hold a brief meeting prior to the funding session at 4:00 p.m. David Siever and Evan Hyatt will arrange a meeting with the new Board members appointed in December, 2000 to explain the Fort Fund process and prepare them for the funding session in January. { IX. Review of any Past Fort Fund Events - The Board reviewed final reports from organizations/events that were funded by Fort Fund including: CSU/Outdoor Cafe Theatre Cinco de Mayo Committee/Cinco de Mayo Celebration Dance Connection Perf. Network/"Turtle Island" Alzheimer's Association/Memory Walk AARP/Frauds & Scams Conference X. Committee Reports - LC Board - No report. (see notes on Perf. Arts Center) Fort Collins Museum - The Museum Advisory Committee is in the process of applying for non-profit status. The MAC will be attending a retreat in February. Convention/Visitors Bureau - Fred Jacobs of the CVB explained to the Board how a proposed marketing district for the east Mulberry hotel properties would allow the CVB to increase their marketing efforts. Arts Alive - The organization's fundraising event of hosted dinners on Friday, Nov. 10 was a success raising more than $7,500. The organization will launch its first major fundraising campaign in January, 2001. APP - The Board continues to review plans for public art throughout the community. XI. Other Business - None XII. Adjournment (1:23 p.m.) Respectfully submitted, Evan Hyatt Public Relations Coordinator City of Fort Collins Library and Recreational Servi Fort Collins Museum FORT COLLINS MUSEUM REPORT CULTURAL RESOURCES BOARD January 24, 2001 PROGRAMS On Friday, December 1, the Museum in conjunction with the Downtown Business Association hosted Winter Fest: A Holiday Celebration in Old Town. Caroling commenced at 6:30 with the Community Tree Lighting at the Museum at 7p.m. Mayor Ray Martinez presided over the Tree Lighting. Approximately 250 people attended. On Sunday, December 3l't, the Museum was once again the kick-off site for the FirstNight New Year's Eve festivities. The cold and snow seemed not to effect the 100+ folks who rang in the New Year on London time. Volunteer Tour Guide Training begins in January. The Museum Advisory Council and the Museum staff hosted a Donor Appreciation Reception on January 190'. The reception celebrated those who donated money, in -kind services, or time to the Museum over the last year. Museum donors contributed approximately $81,000 towards Museum projects in the year 2000. November 1 - February 2, 2001 Heart and Sole: A History of the Shoe, August 10 - April 15, 2000. 200 Mathews Street • Fort Collins, CO 80524 • (970) 221-6738 City of Fort Collins Cult* Library and Recreational Ser,4 Lincoln Center CULTURAL RESOURCES BOARD LINCOLN CENTER REPORT JANUARY 24, 2001 ADMINISTRATION: David Siever, Mark Breimhorst, and Mike Powers attended the annual APAP conference in New York City January 4" through January 10t°. This conference is the major booking conference for Performing Arts Centers throughout the United States. It is essentially a trade show featuring over 350 agencies representing Music, Theatre, and Dance. The Michael Martin Murphey concert sponsored by the Lincoln Center on December 2na was sold out for both performances. The Cowboy Christmas Ball is an amoral event and is one of the most popular events sponsored by the Center. 3,986 series tickets have been sold for the Lincoln Center Superseries for Kids. This years sales are the highest they have been for the past three years. The first show on the series will be Comedy and Pet Theatre on February Is' and 2"a There were two Nutcracker performances at the Lincoln Center this year. The Canyon Concert Nutcracker was attended by 5,184 patrons and the Westin Dance Academy attendance was 1,522. Staff met with the two new Cultural Resources Board members: Anna Otto and Ann Wilmsen to present procedures for Fund Fund and to give an overview of the Fort Collins Museum and the Lincoln Center. VISUAL ARTS: The Lincoln Center is excited to have a special gallery exhibit to highlight "Creative Spaces." Chairs, lamps, doors and dishes will be on display in all galleries. The Fort Collins Cultural Resources Board envisions a community where art, music, performances and the stories of its people enhance the quality of life for all residents and visitors. MISSION: The mission of the Fort Collins Cultural Resources Board is to advise City Council on cultural issues for the greater good of the Fort Collins community. Cultural resources are defined as the arts and history, which stimulate community potential and pride. STRATEGIES TO FULFILL VISION AND MISSION CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT & PROGRAMMING and TOURISM ACCOUNTS - (FORT FUND) Continue to administer Fort Fund Funding Session - January Funding Session - April Funding Session - June Continue to work in conjunction with the Convention and Visitors Bureau when making recommendations for funding from the Tourism Account. Re-examine Fort Fund guidelines & process and make changes if necessary. FACILITIES Continue to make recommendations and support the new Performing Arts Center in the following areas: Development Design Community Outreach Fund-raising Tax Initiative Other areas as needed Develop/Explore possibilities of expansion and improvement of the Fort Collins Museum, 417 West Magnolia - Fort Collins, CO 80521-2646 • (970) 221-6735 • FAX (970) 484-0424 Cultural Resources Board Work Plan - 2001 Page 2 COMMUNITY CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT Participate in projects, which may affect the cultural community: Arts Alive Fort Collins Public/private funding for City cultural projects. Designated revenue sources to support the operation of the city's non-profit arts, science, historical and cultural organizations (such as a Scientific and Cultural Funding District, a seat tax, an increase in the City lodging tax, etc...) Raise the awareness of City Council members and the community as a whole of the value of the cultural assets of the city. Continue to monitor and support the Art In Public Places Program as needed. FORT COLLINS MUSEUM/ LINCOLN CENTER The Board will continue to advise City Council on specific issues regarding the Museum and Lincoln Center. Assist the Museum staff with the implementation of the National Endowment for the Humanities exhibit plan. Assist Museum Advisory Council with promotion of Museum as a cultural asset of the city. Assist staff with the development of new/expanded facilities for the Museum.
