Support Supr. — Recreation Division Guest(s) Present: Kristie Blackmon, Eero Teene Call Meeting to Order: The regular meeting of the Youth Advisory Board commenced at 7:15 p.m. Approval of Minutes: Not applicable. Agenda Review: No changes to the agenda. Citizen Participation: No citizen participation. Agenda: INTRODUCTIONS/ICE BREAKER/TEAM BUILDING All Board members were introduced, and icebreaker and team building activities were led by Recreation staff member Suzy Danford. PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURES Dave Mosnik led a brief discussion of parliamentary procedures, and staff reviewed the process for agenda and minutes distribution and Board members' obligation to attend meetings or notify staff if unable to attend a regularly -scheduled meeting. Youth Advisory Board Minute. September 2, 1998 Page 2 INTRODUCTION OF EERO TEENE Eero Teene has been hired by the City Recreation Division to create and update a teen web site. Board members are encouraged to review the site before the next meeting in October and forward appropriate items of interest to Dave Mosnik, Janet Urban or Eero Teene. GROUND RULES/EXPECTATIONS/ISSUES OF INTEREST Some of the ideas expressed during the brainstorming session included: Ground Rules Respect opinion of others / listen when they are talking Try to be objective Follow through with actions Meeting attendance required / be punctual Have patience with each other and the processes Work to create change Try not to make generalizations Goals Issues Change the image of youth (improve) Make a difference Get the word out Represent all Diverse activities (plan and support) Create a greater interaction between City government and youth Try to change the attitude of youths toward wholesome activities Create environment where youths and adults feel more comfortable Create a greater awareness in the community of youth events (especially non - sport events) Cultural awareness Police harassment of youth Develop comprehensive youth calendar with complete distribution through a variety of media Figure out how to "get the word out" on activities for youth Skateboard issues Board members are to review these lists and be ready to finalize them into a work plan at the next meeting. The Board agreed that monthly meetings should remain on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Youth Activity Center. Youth Advisory Board Nees • September 2, 1998 Page 3 ELECTION OF OFFICERS After some discussion and a recommendation by Councilman Will Smith, the Board agreed not to elect Chairperson and Vice -chairperson until October. The only Board member who is not interested in a position is Jo Faith Warsteane; no one else present declined a nomination. Board members are requested to arrive at the Youth Activity Center for the next meeting between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m.; the meeting will start at approximately 7:15 p.m. Board members who are contending for positions are to submit their profile to Dave Mosnik or Janet Urban by September 23. ANNOUNCEMENTS Dave Mosnik distributed the monthly YAC reports for June, July and August. He announced that there is to be a public -input meeting on September 3 at 7 p.m. regarding a skateboard park. Information on the meeting will appear in the Coloradoan on September 3. Board members are asked to have the meeting announced at their respective schools during passing time. Dave distributed the YAC September calendar. Again, Board members were encouraged to check the youth web site and provide feedback. Will Smith announced that the Healthier Community Coalition is hosting a forum on November 17 at HealthBridges on teen sexual activity and pregnancy. Will stated that there are several non-profit groups in the community (Asset Building, for example) that are involved in teen issues. All groups would welcome participation. Board members were encouraged by Will Smith to think about getting together with the Loveland youth board (formed one year ago) and the Greeley youth board (formed in 1997) to discuss issues and share ideas. Will Smith requests that Board members call him if they have questions. He is trying to visit all high school student councils; will try to visit junior high councils as well. Board members (and other youths) were encouraged by Will to apply to other boards and commissions to give the youth viewpoint on community issues. Dave Mosnik said that anyone is welcome to attend Youth Advisory Board meetings; public comment is welcome and allowed for on the monthly agenda. Adiournment: The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m
