II. Drake Road Pedestrian Bridge Railing Proposal Review
The board's recommendation is to schedule a time to evaluate
the Selection Criteria Form. Suggestions for discussion include:
Artistic excellence of previous work & artistic
excellence of proposal might be considered for separate
categories.
Proposed materials category - Not to use this category if
the proposals have been approved by City engineers.
Safety & maintenance category - City engineers could
grade on a scale (1 to 5).
The APP Selection Committee reviewed the competition
proposals, reviewing slides of previously completed works, written
descriptions and illustrations of their proposed bridge railing
designs. The committee voted using the Selection Criteria Form.
After the scores were tallied, the Selection Committee discussed
each proposal.
Proposal #1 received the highest score. The Selection
Committee voted on selecting proposal 11 as their first choice.
Nine out of ten committee members raised their hands.
It was stated in the RFP the Selection Committee could choose
from 1 to 3 finalists. The committee voted to select only one
finalist, Proposal #1 ("Images of Feet"). Seven out of ten
committee members raised their hands.
The next step will be to contact the finalist and request:
a model/2-D rendering
address the concerns of the selection committee
make a presentation at the scheduled meeting
Some of the committees concerns are:
- Safety - how far do the images project from the bridge.
- Vandalism - how are the feet images mounted to the top
and sides of the railing.
- Color - are there multiple colors or one.
- Scale - are the images large as they are portrayed in the
drawing, are they a mixture of open and closed forms.
- What do both sides of the bridge railing look like. Are
the images repeated or are both sides of the railing
different.
- Show an example of powder coating.
- Clarify between wrought iron and cast elements.
Letters will be sent to all the other artists instructing them
that the committee is currently working with a finalist, but will
hold their application materials pending contract agreement/final
selection.
