HomeMy WebLinkAboutWomens Commission - Minutes - 04/04/1988COMMISSION ON STATUS OF WOMEN Minutes of April 4, 1988 Present: Cindy Hoff, Jim Banning, Martha Denney, Ginny Webster, Beth Ann Smith, Janet Abbey, Alma Vigo -Morales, Liza Daly, Carole Wallace, Linda Cowan. Absent: Jacque Strickland, Mary Jo McDermott, Valerie Mauksch Staff: Mike Powers The meeting was called to order by Cindy Hoff, chairwoman, at 6:05 p.m. Minutes Review of letter to Council re: Sexual Orientation Boards and Commissions Review Comm memo. Status report of community meeting being developed by Outreach Committee Minutes amended. approved as 1. Letter released to Council and media. 2. Martha received a call from a local radio station regarding the letter. 3. Martha requested that a copy of the letter be sent to CRI (Civil Rights for Individuals). Discussion deferred to a later meeting since Commission members had not received this memo in packets. 1. Kay Short reported that a tentative date of May 23rd has been considered for the community meeting. 2. Forms wil be sent to local organiza- tions to be filled out regarding their services available, etcetera, to the community. 3. Carole distributed sample forms and asked for Commission member input or changes before these are sent. 4. Invitations will be extended to local organizations to attend the community meeting (along with a request to RSVP by May 13th). 5. The community meeting will consist of brief presentations by various organizations describing their services, etcetera, followed by a facilitated session of "brainstorming" on how to create links with one another as groups. 1. Cindy will see that memo is in next CSW packets. 2. Liza will contact Women's Political Training Institute re: Boards and Commissions Workshop. 1. Kathy O'Bear will be contacted as the possible facilitator for this event. 2. Updates on this item will be given on future agendas of the Commission. Page 2 Women's I 1. Presentation to City Council will Collection I occur at April 19th meeting, possibly to be combined with presentations of the Women's History Month essay contest winners. 2. Recognition for the family of June Friedman was discussed and encouraged. I I 3. Commission members discussed and made changes in the thank -you letter to be sent to June Friedman's family on behalf of the Commission on the Status of Women. 4. Linda distributed copies of the Women's Collection biblography to members present. Each member is to distribute their copy to a local group or organization with whom they interact and then let Linda know which organizations have received a copy so that the Library can be informed. Week of the I I 1. Commission will share a space with Young Child I the Child Care Coalition and the Fort Collins Public Library this Saturday, April 9th, at the Children's Fair to be held at the University Mall. We will be showing segments of the Concerning Women video series as well as distributing literature regarding the Commission,, the Women's Collection, and the Concerning Women series. 2. Mike reported that this topic will be on the agenda at the next Council meeting (e.g., what the City has done for employees in this area). Other I I 1. Any member who is aware of the current address of Joan Perry (former Commission member) is requested to pass that information on to Cindy. 3. Cindy reported on an informational meeting to be held April 13th, that will be hosted by the City of Greeley. Staff will draft a letter from the Mayor in appreciation to June's family. Thank -you letter from the Commission will be sent as amended. Page 3 Human Relations Commission. The Carole requested that meeting will feature Dorothy Porter, a follow-up report be Director of the Colorado Civil Rights presented to Division. Commission members if anyone is able to attend this meeting.
