HomeMy WebLinkAboutWomens Commission - Minutes - 05/16/1988COMMISSION ON STATUS OF WOMEN Minutes of May 16, 1988 Present: Linda Cowan, Janet Abbey, Kay Short, Carole Wallace, Martha Denney, Val Mauksch, Jacque Strickland, Beth Ann Smith, Ginny Webster. Absent: Jim Banning, Cindy Hoff, Alma Vigo Morales, Mary Jo McDermott Liza Daly. Staff: Ann Turnquist The meeting was called to order by Valarie Mauksch, chairwoman, at 7:00 p.m. Due to Cindy Hoff's absence, secretary for the May 16 meeting is Ginny Webster. Check -In. I Ann Turnquist announced our new Council liaison would be Larry Estrada. Minutes. I Approved as written. I Ginny Webster proposed the officer I duties be included in the bylaws. Larimer Cnty.1 I Linda Cowan reported that the Larimer Domestic I County Domestic Abuse program chair - Abuse Prog. I person, Barbara Chase is very receptive I to including a commission member on the Abuse Board. Community I I Jacque Strickland announced Leslie Botha Meeting I would be the facilitator for this May 26, 1988 I meeting. The discussion that followed addressed the proposed structure of I the meeting, what was to be I accomplished and the continued Liaison I structure between the Commission and I organizations. I Committee I Reports: I I Outreach. I No report as preceeding item included the Committee report. Legal/Eton./ I Linda Cowan reported the Children's Fair Gov't.Report.l held April 9, 1988 at the University Mall was a success with an estimated 1500-2000 people in attendance. The I merchants reacted positively by I considering this event for next year's I agenda of special events. Further agenda item: Bylaws update. Outreach Committee is to meet and plan a format for the May 26 Community meeting. i 0 Page 2 ABC Senate Bill 151. House Bill 131. Sunshine Children's Fair, 6/11 9:00-4:00 Housing Authority Development Fees. New Business: Commission applications Gay and Lesbian Rights. Potluck Library Check-out This bill concerning child support has passed the House and has gone to the Senate. Linda reported Legislation can be expected in the fall. Presently there are 75 pieces of Legislation concerning children in the Legislature. This bill proposes preschool child care in the schools. It provides for instruction to prepare children for school. The fair will be announced in Woman's Pace and the Child Care Coalition Newsletter. No report. Even though the deadline for applica- tions has passed. Members were asked to assist in locating new members. Commission members were asked to attend the Council's regular meeting June 7, 6:30 p.m. to support the addition of "Sexual Orientation" in the Fort Collins Code on Discrimination (p.4501, chapter 45). Val Mauksch suggested a Potluck on June 20th. A new date may have to be chosen. Val offered her home for the affair. Linda Cowan reported the Fort Collins Library has Polaroid camera's that can be checked out. Also the Library has a check-out service for shut-ins who cannot go to the Library. I Page 3 Women's Collection Legal/Econ./ Government Committee. Kay Short announced the Friedman Collection fund has received new donations. Val Mauksch offered to stay involved with the Commission through the Women's Collection at the Library. Martha Denney feels the duties of this committee are to large and the committee should be divided with more members assigned as the issues are so vital to the progress of Women's Issues. She also suggested the Commission use other organizations from the Community meeting scheduled for May 26th to accomplish these goals.
