HomeMy WebLinkAboutWomens Commission - Minutes - 10/17/1988COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN Minutes of October 17, 1988 Present: Liza Daly, Kathy Everett, Duffy Kenning, Mary Jo McDermott, Jane McGovern, Karen Morrison, Beth Ann Smith, Jacque Strickland, Alma Vigo -Morales, Mary Clark, Carole Wallace, Virginia Webster. Carolyn Wade. Absent: James Banning. Staff: Ann Turnquist, Mike Powers Minutes I I Approved as amended. Follow-up I I Liza Daly and members of the Police Department are drafting a letter to Council regarding changes to the citizen input procedure. Draft letter will be placed in the next Council packet. I "Gentle Angry People": Carolyn Wade said that the Interfaith Council would like to use the film. It is available for check-out from Catholic Community Services. Chair Report I I Jim Banning would like a leave of absence from the commission, as he is teaching a class on Monday nights this semester. He would like to stay active as a committee member. Members expressed support for this type of I participation. Sue Furniss - asked CSW to attend a press conference Friday with Dottie Lamm on Women's Issues. Liza will attend. I I Coalition for Civil Rights will hold a press conference, Thursday. Liza will read a statement. They have posters/yard signs and need help with precinct walking. Committees should let Liza know about meeting schedules so that Jim can choose a committee. Page 2 Committee Reports Legal/Govt Outreach Legislation Basic Needs sub -committee met with a member of the Human Rel. Commission. They agreed that the Commission should be advocates of Human Services and let other do work. Read letter to City staff requesting statistical data on poverty, unemployment, etc. (joint with HRC) - Goal to have report done by April 189. Ann Turnquist suggested trying to find an intern. Discussion followed re: whose responsibility it should be to gather data. Concensus was reached to send letter (after HRC meets and signs on). Beth Ann Smith - Subcommittee is meeting and will have report later. They will meet the first Monday of the month at 6:00 p.m. prior to regular meeting. Mary Jo McDermott asked for permission to sign letter on behalf of Women's Commission in support of VALE grant to Larimer County Domestic Abuse Interven- tion Program (LCDAIP). Consensus was reached that this would be appropriate. Mary Jo reviewed what the project involves. President's Coordinating Council is meeting jointly on December 5 with Commission in lieu of regular meeting to network. Meeting at City building with dessert and coffee with Commission hosting. First hour reports of who we are and what we do. Next hour with informal networking. Jane McGovern reported that ABC bill is dead; will reappear in January. Parental leave bill also dead. Economic Development may have data. Ann will follow-up with Linda Hopkins re: demographic data gathering. Asked for presenta- tion on how City government works. Beth Ann will call Larry to check on upcoming matters of concern prior to meetings. Page 3 Other Carole Wallace read a letter from Business TRI 102 re: Affirmative Action. November 3 - League of Women Voters j Candidates Forum. Adjournment Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m. Next meeting scheduled for Monday, November 7, 1988 at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Information Center, City Hall West. Mary Jo McDermott will be secretary
