HomeMy WebLinkAboutWomens Commission - Minutes - 04/19/1999Commission on the Status of Women Minutes April 19, 1999 Present: JoAnn Ginal, Danielle Johnson, Peggy Loonan, Connie Uliasz, Annmarie Izuel Evans, Bobbie Gonzales, Rita Anastasio, Ruth Weatherford. Liaisons: Laurie Fonken-Joseph, City Staff 221-6871 Excused Absences: Susan Crowe Unexcused Absence: Lena Sunthankar, Sylvia Schmid I. Call to order: Meeting was called to order 6:10. II.. Minutes: Approved as written. III. Review Agenda Added announcement by Bobbie about Human Rights Office IV. Announcements: A. Mail was passed around. B. Announced we have 5 openings on the Commission and had 7 applicants V. Business A. Update on Study: Connie passed around the drawing for the cover. Connie met with Diane, Doreen, Audrey, and Libby and got help on the graphs. She will finish up the report and get it to Audrey, Diane and Doreen in the near future. Decided to let people know the questionnaire is available upon request. The Commission is wanting to print the report with one color and there is enough money to do this. Contact will be made with the printer to see if green is considered one color. We also need to see how long it will take to print, and get updated bids given there are more pages. Bobbie will get a bid from Loveland and get that to Danielle. The preference of the Commission members is to have the report bound either GBC, spiral or docutec. Council Study Session has been moved to July 27, 1999. Will be contacting other agencies and organizations to let them know they can attend. May do mailing and advertisement in the paper. Annmarie and Peggy will create a list of groups to invite and get the word out. B. Establishment of Marcile N. Wood Award Committee: Danielle gave an explanation of the award and how we do it in concert with Women's Equality Day. The award goes to a woman who has contributed to the status of women in Fort Collins. Committee needs to figure out how to get more nominations this year, and update the mailing list. Discussed having the Coloradoan run an announcement for nominations, Annmarie will contact the paper. Need to get nominations out soon because some organizations do not meet in the summer. In addition the commission may ask our council liaison or a commission member write a letter to the editor. Award will be presented August 17, 1999 with the Women's Equality Day Proclamation. August 26' is Women's Equality Day because that is the day the 19' amendment establishing the right for women to vote was passed in 1919 it became effective in 1920. Annmarie will chair the committee. Ruth will help with it as well. Annmarie will call Susan to see if she is interested in helping. Try to get the nominations out by mid -May and have them back by July 15, 1999. Will be able to get invitations this year from Kwik Kopy. May want to do a bit more this year given that the report will have gone before council the month before. Ideas were to draft a letter to the editor or a Soapbox for Women's Equality Day. C. Report from Human Relations Commission: No one was able to attend this meeting. D. Legislation: Bobbie shared information on two items which were voted on in Washington. The budget, both houses voted yes on the fiscal 2000 budget. The second issue was the census. The house voted to allow cities and towns to challenge the census bureau data and demand recount. Peggy got an e-mail from NARAL about funding for family planning and the potential that Owens will veto this line item from the budget as an attempt to cut funding from Planned Parenthood. Adding Sexual Orientation to hate crimes legislation was voted down. Same sex marriage ban was voted down. E. Other: 1) Bobbie recommended that Commission on the Status of Women send a letter for the continuation of support for the work done by the Human Rights Office. Bobbie will do the letter in the name of the Commission. Annmarie will sign. 2) Bobbie has resigned from the committee designing the Older Women's Gathering. The event is in October and the group meets the fourth Monday of the month at 1:00. JoAnn will share this with Ruth. Bobbie will call Marjorie. 3) There will be two copies of the overheads on the study at the Human Rights Office for anyone to look at and practice giving presentations so more members can get out and do presentation. 4) Invite Karen Weitkunat the council liaison to the Commission on the Status of Women to the next meeting. 5) Presentation of the study at the May 24, 1999 Community Forum of the Multicultural Commission. 6) Need to begin to solicit groups to present the findings of the study to.
