Introduction of Jill Stilwell (new Museum Director) - Mike Powers introduced Jill Stilwell as the newly appointed Fort Collins Museum Director. Ms. Stilwell expressed excitement over having the opportunity to work with the Board in the future in order to move the Museum forward. Mr. Powers thanked the members of the Board who served on the selection committee for the Museum Director and helped with the interview process. Discussion Items V. Building Community Choices Update - Jennifer Beccard presented the Board's recommendation on the site for the new performing arts center to City Council at their work session on May 12. All of the Council members present at the meeting were in favor of the Board's recommendation to place the new performing arts facility in the downtown area. The Council will vote on the site recommendation at their regular meeting on June 2. Given the approval of the Council at that meeting, city staff can begin the process of finding a site for the new performing arts center in the downtown area. The Board discussed the issue of collaborating with Colorado State University in other areas related to the performing arts since a combined facility seems unlikely. Given that the City Council approves the downtown site for the new performing arts center, Ms. Beccard suggested that the Board then brainstorm ideas for collaborative efforts with CSU and then draft a letter to City Council and Dr. Al Yates, President of Colorado State University, outlining those ideas. Ms. Beccard asked that the outcomes from the State of the Arts meeting be considered when brainstorming ideas for collaborative efforts with CSU. Joan Day moved that the Board draft a letter to Dr. Yates listing ideas for collaborative efforts with Colorado State University and the City in regards to the performing arts. No second. The Board will discuss this issue at their regular meeting in June. VI. State of the Arts Update - Jennifer Beccard updated the Board on what has been happening since the State of the Arts meeting that was held on March 30. Rebecca Reynolds completed a final report on the meeting. City Council approved funds for the printing and mailing of the final report which will be sent to participants of the meeting, city staff and other interested parties. Council also approved funding for a follow-up meeting to be held on Monday, June 29. The goal of this meeting is to create active groups that will address the issues raised during the meeting of Mar. 30. VII. Information on "Valuing the Arts Conference" - Jennifer Beccard and Corinne Govan will be attending the "Valuing the Arts Conference" in Denver June 6 & 7. They will report back to the Board at their next regular meeting on June 25. VIII. Discussion of June Fort Fund granting session - The June Fort Fund granting session will be held Wednesday, June 24 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Center. Information regarding the eligible applicants will be available for Board members no later than June 17. Joan Day moved that the Board draft a letter to the City Council requesting that the Council allow the Fort Collins Convention and Visitors Bureau to pursue convention business to bolster the Cultural Development and Programming Account (Fort Fund). Currently the CVB is not allowed to pursue convention business under their contract with the City. The CVB Board of Directors expressed concerned to Ms. Day and Brenda Martin that the Fort Fund account may diminish in the future due to a possible lack of convention business in Fort Collins. Brenda Martin seconded the motion. The motion was not supported and was tabled for discussion at a future meeting given that the Board receives more information on the issue. That information would need to include a letter from the CVB with background on the contract between the CVB and the City and an official request from the CVB for the Board's assistance on this issue. IX. Strategic Plan ("capacity review") - The Board began a discussion relating to their Strategic Plan that was conceived at their retreat on Nov. 1, 1997. Board members expressed that they needed more time to work on individual assignments from the retreat. Those assignments will be reviewed at the Board's regular meeting in June and each Board member will report on the assignments at the July meeting. X. Review of past Fort Fund events - The Board reviewed final reports from the following events/organizations: Downtown Business Association - First Night Poudre School District - Arts Extravaganza Interactive Energy Arts Asian/Pacific American Students Indian Student Association Elderhaus Discovery Center Science Museum CSU - Invitational Poster Exhibition XI. As part of the National Association of Interpreters annual conference, Museum staff presented a program on Visitor Studies for about 20 professional attendees. After the talk, the attendees went through Ties to the Land and evaluated the entire exhibit. It was a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and gain new insights. The Museum also hosted coffee and cake for the NAI's BBQ held in Library Park (actually it was held in the Library due to unseasonable rain and cold!) More than 100 people toured the Museum facility and listened to a folk guitarist. New Museum Logo! Bob Coonts selected the Museum as the "client" for his summer graphic design class at CSU. Each student created a logo, a brochure, gift shop items, and posters for the Fort Collins Museum. Staff was then invited to attend the final class and each student presented their proposal. The quality of the work was outstanding and it was a difficult choice to select only one. A finalist has been selected and Museum staff will work with this individual to create a new museum brochure with the new logo and potentially new signage for the building. The Fort Collins Museum staff is getting to know their neighbors. Jill Stilwell recently attended an "Old Town Neighbors" meeting and the Museum will be assisting with "Pie in the Park" on August 0 in celebration of national "Neighborhood Night Out". -over- 200 Mathews Street • Fort Collins, CO 80524 • (970) 221-6,738 • EXHIBITS Silent Echoes, opening July 2e, explores the ghost towns of Colorado's prairies.
