MEETING MINUTES
August 18, 1997

Call to
Order: The meeting was called to order at 6:04 p.m.
Liaison
Report: None
Minutes: Minor typographic corrections were made to the minutes. Motion to approve made by Diane
Fisk - Lynne Warner seconded.
Introductions: Members introduced themselves and new members welcomed.
Announcements:
Marcile N. Wood Award - a reception will be held August 19, 1997 at 4:30 at City Hall with the award
presented at 5:30 during the City Council meeting. The recipient is Blanche Magnuson. Other incumbents
will receive certificates.
Micki McMillen is very disappointed but needs to resign from the Commission because of scheduling
conflicts. She did want to say that she hopes all members are taking part in the leadership roles that are
right for them.
• Janet Pew of the American Association of University Women has asked for a representative from CS W to
be a guest at their 9/3/97 meeting to discuss the survey, survey questions and give a synopsis. Audrey
Faulkner will be asked if she can go. If not, Diane Lathrop will go with JoAnn Ginal.
Business Items:
• Human Rights Commission Report - Lu Fisk
An ordinance regarding improving the Human Rights Commission in working with the police department is
being waited on from Chief of Police, Dennis Harrison.
Human Rights Ordinance Report - Diane Lathrop
Three meetings are scheduled with the task force. A handout was distributed showing the summary and a
comparison of proposed changes and different state/federal laws. The first meeting was in introductory
meeting and the second meeting was an open house with about 30 people speaking with at least 25 of those
speakers speaking on sexual orientation. A video tape of the meeting is available. City Council is pushing
to make their own decision without giving it to the voters. There will be another open forum for comments

September 17, 1997, 6:30-9:00 Lincoln Cneter Ludlow Room, with a full -day work session scheduled after
that open forum. Lots of changes and clean-up need to be made. The City Attorney's office is working on
changes. Terry Summers will be speaking at next meeting 8/20 at 6:30 in the Columbine Room at the
Lincoln Center. Morale support from CSW members would be appreciated!
• Welfare Reform: No report.
• Slate of New Officers: Danielle Johnson is willing to be Chairperson; JoAnn Ginal is willing to Co-chair
and Becki Fosha is willing to serve as Secretary. JOArm maybe moving out of state. There will be a slate
for the September 15th meeting.
• l0th Anniversary Report: no meeting on the 30th. Doreen Kemp will help finish this -the flood delayed
things. They have been working on recommendations - most of the report is written but they still need to
get together as a group to finish up. It will be completed in time for the retreat, or possibly by the end of
September and sent to CSW members for review.
Nancy Meginness is acting in the same capacity as County Liaison.
Laurie Fonken-Joseph passed around a copy of Denver's CSW report.
Funding: Laurie reported that Chris Kneeland worked with John Fischbach to get $4,000 for printing.
• Women's Equality Day - Sept. 26th. A proclamation will be read at the City Council meeting on 8/19/97.
Danielle Johnson and other members will receive the proclamation.
• Retreat - The Edwards House is reserved for October 20th, 1997. After much discussion, a menu was
selected consisting of Chicken and Walrus ice cream pie.
• Six Month Time Line - Doreen Kemp created a six-month time line and we are on track. It will be important
to look at what's coming up and how you want to be involved.
Miscellaneous:
• Mail was passed around. Laurie talked with Chris Kneeland regarding a speaker/facilitator for strategic
planning. Suggestions were: Alma Vigo Morales or: Rita Mackrill, former Director of Larimer County
Human Resources; and Suzanne Jarboe -Simpson. Laurie will see about an honorarium.
• Diane Lathrop mentioned that new members are not known. very well. New members discussed what they
hope to accomplish and what they want to get out of the CSW. Laurie will distribute copies of their
applications with the minutes.
• Christina will provide refreshments for the September meeting.
• Meeting adjourned at 7:32 p.m.
